Job description

GD168 Science Data Center Operations Technical Support Developer
The Science Data Center Operations Technical Support Developer will work with a team of experts in the Goddard Space Flight Center Earth and Data Information Services Center (GES DISC) (https://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov) and will be an essential team member who will interact with scientists, system administrators, software developers, and other operational staff to support a large data center that serves national and global users interested in data produced by various NASA earth and environmental science missions.
Science Data Center Operations Technical Support Analyst Position duties:
  • Support ongoing science data processing, ingest, and distribution operations for multiple GES DISC data streams
  • Ensure data availability from data providers and make available for science production and user community
  • Assist in statistical analytics related to data collection inventory and data metrics collection and reporting. This may include generating, formatting, developing and automating reports, or ability to tweak/modify existing automated scripts that collect and generate inventory or visualization of data metrics
  • Create and modify scripts to improve reporting of operations status
  • Monitor operational alert reporting, assist with troubleshooting, and submission of trouble ticket requests when necessary
  • Document data anomalies via ticketing system, and investigate causes
  • Work with system administrators to verify consistency of data archive disk backups
  • Support system testing for new software releases
  • Coordinate with external interfaces for ingest and distribution of new data products

Science Data Center Operations Technical Support Analyst Required:
  • BS in computer sciences, physical sciences, civil, environmental, systems engineering, or related fields
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environment (2 years)
  • A keen interest in problem solving and troubleshooting of issues and independent/creative outlook on solving challenges
  • Familiarity and experience with data formats and metadata, preferably as related to earth or environmental data
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a database user. Familiarity with SQL queries and database table relationships.
  • Minimum 2 years prior software development or maintenance experience in Python, C, or Perl
  • Excellent writing, and oral communication skills
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with US residency for the past 3 consecutive years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.

Science Data Center Operations Technical Support Analyst Desired:
  • Experience in an operational data center and knowledge of data storage systems
  • Self-motivated individual with experience or interest in leading projects
  • Understanding of visualization tools (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Grafana, etc.) and techniques as pertains to data analytics
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS, etc.)
