These internships typically involve assisting with data collection, map creation, spatial analysis, and supporting GIS projects under the supervision of experienced staff. They are a great way to build technical skills, learn about GIS software, and make professional connections in the field. Most GIS internships require some coursework or familiarity with GIS concepts, but they are intended for those just starting their careers.

What types of projects and tasks do entry level GIS interns typically work on within a team setting?

Entry level GIS interns are often involved in supporting larger projects by assisting with data collection, map creation, and spatial data analysis. They typically collaborate with experienced GIS analysts and project managers, contributing to tasks such as updating geodatabases, conducting field data verification, and preparing visualizations or reports. Interns also participate in team meetings and may work cross-functionally with professionals from fields like urban planning, environmental science, or engineering, gaining exposure to real-world workflows and industry software. This collaborative environment helps interns build practical skills and professional networks, laying the foundation for future advancement.
