What is a Data Science Civil Engineering job?

A Data Science Civil Engineering job combines data science techniques with civil engineering expertise to analyze, model, and optimize infrastructure projects. Professionals in this field use machine learning, statistical analysis, and big data tools to improve structural design, traffic systems, and environmental sustainability. They work with large datasets from sensors, GIS systems, and simulations to enhance decision-making in construction, transportation, and urban planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Science Civil Engineering position, and why are they important?

To excel in Data Science Civil Engineering, you need a strong background in civil engineering principles along with expertise in data analytics, statistical modeling, and programming languages such as Python or R. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, GIS software, machine learning libraries, and certifications in data science or engineering analysis is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams distinguish top professionals in this field. These skills are crucial for driving data-informed decisions, optimizing engineering designs, and effectively addressing complex infrastructure challenges.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Data Science within Civil Engineering?

Professionals in Data Science Civil Engineering routinely analyze large datasets related to construction, infrastructure performance, and environmental variables to inform design and maintenance decisions. Daily tasks may include developing predictive models, preparing visualization dashboards, interpreting sensor data, and collaborating with civil engineers to translate data insights into actionable project recommendations. The role often requires close teamwork with engineering, IT, and project management staff to ensure that analytical findings align with project goals and regulatory requirements. This blend of technical and collaborative work makes each day dynamic and impactful, contributing directly to improved safety, efficiency, and sustainability in civil engineering projects.

Can a civil engineer become a data scientist?

A civil engineer can become a data scientist by acquiring skills in programming, statistics, and machine learning, often through additional education or training. Their background in problem-solving and data analysis can be advantageous, especially when working with engineering or infrastructure data using tools like Python, R, or SQL.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

In the field of civil engineering, very few professionals earn $500,000 or more annually. Typically, high salaries at this level are seen in specialized roles such as senior engineering managers, project directors, or consultants with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities. Compensation varies based on industry, location, and company size, but reaching this level often requires significant expertise and managerial duties beyond standard engineering roles.

Job description

Civil Science is seeking a driven and experienced Public Works Project Manager to support and grow our public works practice in Utah (Salt Lake City or Lehi Office).

This is more than a traditional project management role โ€” it's an opportunity to play a key role in a growing market. You'll lead meaningful municipal infrastructure projects that directly impact the communities we serve, while building strong relationships with local agencies and stakeholders.

We're looking for a licensed engineer who thrives in a client-facing role โ€” someone who takes ownership of project delivery, leads collaborative teams, and enjoys guiding projects from concept through completion. You'll step into an active backlog of work with immediate opportunities to contribute and help expand our presence across Idaho.

At Civil Science, you won't just contribute โ€” you'll have a stake in what we're building. As a 100% employee-owned company, our culture is rooted in accountability, collaboration, and long-term thinking, giving you the opportunity to grow your career while helping shape the future of our Utah operations.

What You'll Get to Do:

  • Serve as a primary client contact for public works projects across Utah
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget for multiple active municipal projects
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams
  • Deliver high-quality infrastructure projects for city, county, and state agencies
  • Support business development efforts, including proposals and client relationship growth
  • Collaborate with leadership to expand backlog and strengthen market presence
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to team development
  • Ensure projects meet quality, risk, and compliance standards

What We're Looking For:

  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to build and maintain client relationships
  • Experience working with public agency clients
  • Ability to lead teams and drive accountability
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Interest in contributing to a growing regional market

What Qualifications You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • 8+ years of experience in public works or municipal infrastructure projects
  • Experience with city, county, or DOT clients
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam, and Civil 3D
  • Experience delivering transportation and public works infrastructure projects
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a client-facing environment
  • Ability to travel and meet client needs throughout Utah and potentially in surrounding states.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods while working on a computer; lift up to 30 pounds; work on active construction sites with uneven terrain, varying weather conditions, and moderate to high noise levels; and stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required.

What Will Help You Stand Out

  • Experience working with Utah municipalities or local agencies
  • Business development or proposal support experience
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior staff
  • Familiarity with regional infrastructure needs and standards
