What is a Data Science Civil Engineering job?

A Data Science Civil Engineering job combines data science techniques with civil engineering expertise to analyze, model, and optimize infrastructure projects. Professionals in this field use machine learning, statistical analysis, and big data tools to improve structural design, traffic systems, and environmental sustainability. They work with large datasets from sensors, GIS systems, and simulations to enhance decision-making in construction, transportation, and urban planning.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

In the field of civil engineering, very few professionals earn $500,000 or more annually. Typically, high salaries at this level are seen in specialized roles such as senior engineering managers, project directors, or consultants with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities. Compensation varies based on industry, location, and company size, but reaching this level often requires significant expertise and managerial duties beyond standard engineering roles.

Can a civil engineer become a data scientist?

A civil engineer can become a data scientist by acquiring skills in programming, statistics, and machine learning, often through additional education or training. Their background in problem-solving and data analysis can be advantageous, especially when working with engineering or infrastructure data using tools like Python, R, or SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Science Civil Engineering position, and why are they important?

To excel in Data Science Civil Engineering, you need a strong background in civil engineering principles along with expertise in data analytics, statistical modeling, and programming languages such as Python or R. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, GIS software, machine learning libraries, and certifications in data science or engineering analysis is often required. **MUST RESIDE IN NORTH DAKOTA OR RELOCATE TO NORTH DAKOTA TO WORK REMOTELY**

This is more than a leadership role โ€” it's an opportunity to shape the direction of a division, influence how transportation projects are delivered, and build a high-performing team in a growing market. You'll play a key role in delivering impactful projects while helping expand our transportation presence and reputation.

Our culture is grounded in our CORE valuesโ€”Community, Ownership, Relationships, and Excellenceโ€”giving you the platform to grow your career and play a key role in shaping the future of our transportation division.

What You'll Get to Do:

  • Lead and manage the Transportation Design Division, including project managers and design staff
  • Oversee multiple transportation design projects, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget performance
  • Serve as a senior client contact for transportation-related work
  • Support and drive business development efforts, including client relationships and pursuits
  • Collaborate with leadership to grow the transportation division and expand market presence
  • Mentor and develop staff, fostering a strong team culture and technical excellence
  • Ensure consistent application of QA/QC processes and high-quality project delivery
  • Balance strategic leadership with hands-on involvement in project oversight

What We're Looking For:

  • Strong leadership and division management experience
  • Proven ability to oversee multiple projects and lead project managers
  • Experience in transportation design and infrastructure projects
  • Ability to balance technical work with operational and strategic responsibilities
  • Strong client relationship and business development skills
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and team-building abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to drive quality and consistency across projects

What Qualifications You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license for North Dakota required
  • 10+ years of experience in transportation design or related infrastructure
  • Experience managing teams and leading complex projects
  • Strong understanding of project management principles (budgeting, scheduling, QA/QC)
  • Experience working with NDDOT and/or public agency clients
  • Proficiency in relevant design and production tools

What Will Help You Stand Out:

  • Experience leading a division or specialty group within an engineering firm
  • Proven track record of implementing new tools, processes, or innovations
  • Active involvement in industry organizations or technical committees
  • Business development experience, including proposals and client engagement
  • Experience working across multiple offices or disciplines
