What does a nanny do?

A nanny is a professional caregiver who is responsible for the daily care and supervision of children in a family's home. Their duties often include preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and ensuring the children's safety and well-being. Nannies may also help with light housekeeping related to the children, such as laundry and tidying play areas. The specific responsibilities can vary depending on the family's needs and the age of the children.

What are some typical challenges a nanny may face when working full-time with a family throughout the year?

Full-time nannies working year-round often encounter challenges such as adapting to each family's unique routines, balancing the needs of multiple children, and maintaining open communication with parents regarding expectations and discipline. Additionally, nannies may need to manage changing schedules due to school holidays or parents' work commitments. Building trust and setting boundaries can take time, but it's essential for a positive and sustainable working relationship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a nanny, you need a solid understanding of child development, basic first aid, and experience in child care, often supported by references or relevant certifications. Familiarity with CPR certification, early childhood education courses, and communication tools with parents is highly beneficial. Patience, reliability, and strong problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills for creating a nurturing and safe environment. These skills and qualities ensure the child's well-being, foster healthy growth, and build trust with families.

Job description

Overview

DORADO, PUERTO RICO (NATIONWIDE SEARCH) - A wonderful family in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, is seeking a FULL-TIME LIVE-OUT NANNY to join their household and care for their three bright and inquisitive children: a 5-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy. These outgoing and curious children love to ask questions, explore, and engage with the world around them. The family is looking for a calm, confident, and emotionally grounded nanny-someone who is safety-conscious, exceptionally patient, and able to command respect while remaining warm, friendly, and approachable. Experience working with children with differing needs and/or an occupational therapy (OT) background is highly valued. Your job primarily centers around their 5-year-old, but their 8-year-old daughter is super athletic and they would love to have someone who can actively keep up with her!

This is a live-out position based in the beautiful Dorado Beach community of Puerto Rico. A housing stipend is available for the right candidate relocating to the area. Dad's travel schedule is highly variable and dependent upon client needs, so there is no set travel schedule. Flexibility is essential. While overnight care will not be required every time Dad travels, there may be occasions when Mom has evening commitments and would need the nanny to stay overnight while Dad is away. The family is seeking a candidate who is comfortable providing occasional overnight support as needed.

The hours are 12:00 PM-8:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The position guarantees 40 hours per week, with some flexibility in how those hours are distributed. The nanny will assist with running errands, light housekeeping, children's laundry, meal preparation, and household organization; walking the family's two small dogs is preferred but not required. In the afternoons and evenings, the nanny will partner with Mom to manage school pick-ups, after-school activities, homework support, and evening routines, including dinner, bath time, and bedtime. The family is eager to welcome a long-term caregiver as an extension of their family.

Travel is required. The family travels together approximately three times per year, including annual trips to Connecticut for Thanksgiving and travel to Europe during both Christmas vacation and Spring Break. The ideal candidate will be passport-ready and enthusiastic about traveling alongside the family. In addition, the parents occasionally travel independently for weekend getaways, during which time the nanny would remain with the children and provide full childcare coverage, including overnights. For example, the family anticipates being away November 15-17 and would require coverage during that time. Trips are typically no longer than one week.

The family lives in a beautiful home near the beach and enjoys spending time on the water. The nanny must be a strong swimmer and comfortable supervising children in the ocean. A car will be provided for work-related transportation, and the nanny must be comfortable driving golf carts, which are the primary mode of transportation within the community. Spanish-speaking ability, or the ability to comfortably navigate conversational Spanish, is highly preferred and would be especially helpful for daily life on the island.

The household includes two small, friendly King Charles Cavaliers who love people and enjoy sitting on laps, so comfort around dogs is essential. The family is seeking a warm, engaging, steady, and adaptable nanny who is attentive, fully present, and not distracted by their phone while caring for the children. The ideal candidate is patient, confident, and emotionally intuitive-someone who can set boundaries, remain calm under pressure, and foster a respectful, structured environment while still being friendly and approachable. A minimum of six years of professional childcare experience is required. Pay is $120,000 annual gross salary, and will be paid legally via payroll, in addition to PTO, paid holidays, and sick days.

They are open to a one-year commitment for candidates who are already local. The family anticipates relocating back to Connecticut in 2028 and would ideally love for the right person to transition with them when that time comes. That said, they remain flexible and are ultimately focused on finding the best long-term fit.
