Job description

At RK&K, we are seeking an ambitious complete streets & multimodal transportation Project Engineer to join our diverse and growing team in Pennsylvania. As Project Engineer in our highway design team, you will be responsible for the design, coordination and analysis of complex multimodal transportation design projects spanning the entire project life cycle, from concept development and alternative analysis through final design and construction administration. Projects will be focused on a wide array of complete streets, bikeway design, trails, and projects that improve multimodal safety. You will be a critical member of our multidisciplinary team delivering new roadways, trails, bikeways, complete streets widenings, and resurfacing projects to RK&K's valued clients, including Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the City of Philadelphia, local municipalities, port authorities, and quasi-government agencies.
This position can be filled from RK&K's Allentown, Harrisburg, King of Prussia, or Philadelphia office while supporting projects across Pennsylvania and firmwide through our proven workshare program. The successful candidate will be expected to work from one of the above offices with flexibility to balance remote work, as needed.
Essential Functions
  • Develop planning-level concepts that address vehicular, bicycle, and/or pedestrian safety concerns for intersections and corridors
  • Working with an interdisciplinary team, develop and deploy a toolbox of solutions that improve the multimodal transportation network including road diets, geometric safety improvements, separated bicycle facilities, raised bicycle lanes, bicycle signals, sidewalk improvements, transit boarding islands, ADA ramps, protected intersections, median refuge islands, trails, trailheads, pedestrian bridges, drainage, signing and pavement markings, tactile walking surface indicators, and others.
  • Design and analysis of horizontal and vertical alignments of roadways, trails, and bicycle facilities
  • Prepare plan, profile, cross section, and detail sheets
  • Design temporary traffic control plans
  • Calculate quantities and prepare phased construction cost estimates based on the level of submission
  • Support preparation of design documentation
  • Support preparation of specifications and bid packages
  • Collaborate with project managers to develop scopes of work, cost proposals, and marketing materials
  • Coordinate together with other disciplines on creative solutions to a variety of design challenges
  • Work alongside project management team to ensure adherence to project scope, schedule, and budgets
  • Ability to manage, teach, and mentor junior engineers and entry level designers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff at all levels, clients, and peer consultants and teaming partners
  • Ability to collaborate with project managers and senior members of RK&K's Pennsylvania management team to achieve the best outcomes
  • While public engagement will not be your core role, the successful candidate will effectively communicate our projects to the community including:
    • Experience with planning, supporting, and/or executing successful public engagement activities
    • Seeking input early in design through a variety of methods, including virtual and in-person public meetings and deployment of survey tools.
    • Describing how designs address the project need using effective graphics and written/oral communication
      • 1:1 conversations with concerned stakeholders

Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Five (5) + years of experience in multimodal and complete streets roadway design
  • Practical and proficient knowledge of OpenRoads Designer and/or AutoCAD Civil3D
  • Strong technical knowledge of basic roadway design principles
  • Experience in and passion for complete street design

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Pennsylvania Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Previous project experience, or knowledge of, national multimodal and ADA standards like NACTO and PROWAG
  • Experience with Innovative intersection design, sidewalk or shared use path design
