Job description

RK&K is hiring a Roadway Project Engineer to join our roadway design team in our growing DC office. Our team-oriented environment is supported by subject matter experts and experienced mentors that will help you succeed. The successful candidate will work closely with Project Managers to manage tasks with significant opportunities for growth and increasing responsibilities. Projects will include, but not be limited to streetscapes, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, roadway widenings, and resurfacings. Clients include the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), VDOT, USDOT, and several local municipalities in Maryland and Virginia.
Essential Functions
  • Assisting Project Managers in the preparation of contract plans, specifications and construction cost estimates on bicycle, pedestrian, and roadway improvement projects.
  • Working in a team environment and able to coordinate with multiple design disciplines to develop creative and innovative solutions to design challenges, and in preparing final design documents.
  • Apply DDOT, VDOT, MDSHA, and AASHTO design criteria, regulatory requirements, standards, and processes.
  • Designing roadway plans, profiles, typical sections, cross sections and grading.
  • Preparing design computations and quantity calculations.
  • Designing or preparing concept road plans and alternatives for new transportation systems or retrofits to existing systems.
  • Preparing technical design reports and summarizing project elements in presentation materials.
  • Performing feasibility studies.
  • Coordinating with utility companies, agencies and assisting with public outreach efforts.
  • Performing field investigations to collect data including field measurements, photographs, sketches, verifying surveys and identifying changes.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • 4 years of experience in transportation/roadway design
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • MicroStation V8i, OpenRoads/Geopak/InRoads skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Passion for client service, teamwork and ability to work well with others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of Highway Design Standards, MUTCD, DDOT, VDOT, AASHTO, and other highway design manuals and guidelines.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • 9 years of experience in transportation/roadway design.
  • Familiarity with NACTO guidelines.
  • GIS network analyst skills.
