Job description

St. Michael Poplar Springs Parish seeks candidates for an Interim Director of Liturgical Music. The Director of Music and Liturgy, in collaboration with the pastoral staff and Liturgy Committee, is responsible for fulfilling the parish mission, particularly, in supporting the Faithful to gather as disciples of Jesus in a strong liturgical life. Calling upon their individual strengths in musical expression and leveraging the skills of others (both paid and volunteer), the Director is responsible for providing music for parish liturgical celebrations that are appropriate, prayerful and beautiful. The Director, supported by the Liturgy Committee and the Pastor, is also responsible for ensuring the component parts of a strong liturgical life are properly envisioned, planned and executed.

Essential Functions
  • Provides, both as a musician and as the coordinator all of musical groups, a broad expression of beautifully rendered music liturgically appropriate in the Catholic setting.
  • Coordinates all aspects of the music ministry to ensure Mass celebrations include liturgically appropriate music. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling musicians and choosing music.
  • Directly support funerals and weddings scheduled at St. Michael
  • In collaboration with the Liturgy Committee, plans and coordinates all liturgical celebrations (this does not include daily Mass)
  • In collaboration with the Liturgy Committee, monitors expenditures against the approved budget and reports variances to the Director of Parish Operations.

General Duties:
  • Serves as a liturgical music resource for the Liturgy Committee.
  • Attends and contributes to Liturgy Committee meetings
  • Recruits musicians to support the music needs of the various liturgies
  • Ensures that parish musical instruments are in good repair

Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Music or its equivalent, Master's Degree preferred
  • Five years' experience (paid or volunteer) providing liturgical music in the Roman Catholic setting, showing progressive growth in responsibilities sufficient to be successful in this role
  • A working knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical theology and the repertoire of sacred music
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaborative with others to bring out their best work, tempered with a prudent balance of enthusiasm and patience
  • Accomplished keyboardist with choral, vocal, and conducting training and experience to ensure these areas of music liturgy are well-lead, well-rehearsed and able to meet the needs of the parish music program
  • Demonstrated ability to teach new music to the assembly, develop and nurture musicianship in others and provide pastorally-sensitive guidance in music selection in situations such as funerals and weddings

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex office administrative problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with staff, parents, children, youth, young adults and adults within and outside of the parish - some of whom may be dissatisfied individuals.
Working Environment:
Evening and weekend work is required, particularly to attend meetings of the Liturgy Committee and other committees as well as serve during the various liturgical services and to lead practices.
Pay Rate: $30.00, Hourly
