What You'll Do
As a Substation Designer II, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality electrical designs for substation and power infrastructure projects. Working alongside engineers and multidisciplinary teams, you'll contribute to projects from concept through construction-supporting reliable and resilient energy systems across a diverse range of clients and industries.
How You Will Make an Impact
Design & Project Execution
  • Develop detailed electrical designs, including schematics, wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and equipment details
  • Create substation design packages including plans, sections, elevations, grounding, lighting, and conduit/cable systems
  • Prepare Bills of Materials and support equipment selection and specifications
  • Perform design calculations (grounding, cable/conduit sizing, lightning protection, lighting, and bus design)
  • Translate conceptual designs into construction-ready drawings and documentation

Technical Collaboration & Coordination
  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to deliver coordinated design solutions
  • Interpret and apply industry codes, standards, and client specifications
  • Support site evaluations and incorporate field data into designs
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams and clients to ensure alignment and project success

Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Review design drawings to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to scope, schedule, and standards
  • Execute design revisions based on markups, redlines, and evolving project requirements
  • Identify and recommend solutions to design challenges

Tools & Technology
  • Utilize industry-standard design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation) to develop 2D and 3D deliverables
  • Organize and maintain project files, revisions, and documentation in a structured and accessible manner
  • Continuously expand knowledge of design tools, standards, and best practices

Team & Development
  • Mentor and support junior designers and team members
  • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performance team environment

What You'll Need to Be Successful
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or related field with 4+ years of experience, or
  • Associate degree with 6+ years of experience, or
  • 8+ years of progressive electrical design experience

Technical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
  • Strong experience preparing 2D and 3D engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of electrical design principles, substation layouts, and power systems
  • Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards

Professional Skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines
