What is an MSP Network Engineer?

An MSP Network Engineer is an IT professional who manages, configures, and supports network infrastructure for clients of a Managed Service Provider (MSP). They are responsible for tasks such as network design, installation, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance of routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless devices. These engineers ensure that client networks are secure, reliable, and optimized for performance, often working remotely or on-site for multiple organizations. They also handle network monitoring, incident response, and implement upgrades to keep systems up-to-date.

What are some common challenges MSP Network Engineers face when managing multiple client networks, and how can they be addressed?

MSP Network Engineers often juggle diverse client environments, each with unique configurations, requirements, and security protocols. A frequent challenge is efficiently monitoring and troubleshooting issues across various networks while ensuring minimal downtime. To address this, engineers typically use centralized management and monitoring tools, maintain clear documentation, and implement standardized procedures where possible. Consistent communication with clients and internal teams is also crucial to quickly resolve incidents and maintain strong client relationships.

What is the difference between Msp Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectMsp Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentManaged service providers, client sitesIn-house IT teams, corporate offices
ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement, support client networksMaintain and troubleshoot internal networks
Industry UsageIT service providers, MSPsCorporate, small business, government

The main difference is that Msp Network Engineers typically work for managed service providers supporting multiple clients, focusing on designing and maintaining client networks. Network Administrators usually work within a single organization, managing internal network infrastructure. Both roles require similar certifications and skills but differ in work environment and scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MSP Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MSP Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking principles, protocols (such as TCP/IP, DNS, VPN), and a relevant degree or certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, firewalls, routers, switches, and remote management platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to multitask under pressure distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure reliable network performance and client satisfaction in a dynamic managed services environment.

About CRT

Calculated Research & Technology (CRT) partners with businesses across Utah and beyond to deliver IT, cybersecurity, cloud, and infrastructure solutions. Our culture is driven by three core values: We Care, Deliver Wow, and Be Curious. If those resonate with you, wed love to meet you.

The Role

Were looking for a seasoned Lead Network Engineer to design, implement, secure, and support enterprise network environments across a diverse client base. Youll serve as our senior technical resource and escalation point, mentor junior engineers, and build trusted advisor relationships with clients. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives on complexity, values craftsmanship, and wants to leadnot just execute.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain secure, scalable network infrastructures across multiple client environments
  • Lead network architecture, implementation, migration, and modernization projects
  • Manage firewall, VPN, SD-WAN, wireless, routing, and switching technologies
  • Serve as senior escalation point for complex networking and security issues
  • Mentor junior engineers; develop and maintain documentation, standards, and diagrams
  • Leverage monitoring and automation tools to drive operational efficiency
  • Build trusted client relationships through technical expertise and exceptional service

Technical Expertise

Hands-on experience in most of the following is expected:

  • Enterprise LAN/WAN/WLAN, VPN, SD-WAN design and support
  • Advanced routing and switching: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, VLANs, STP, LACP, QoS, DHCP, DNS, NAT
  • Firewalls: Check Point, Fortinet, Barracuda CloudGen, and/or Palo Alto Networks; Extreme Networks platforms
  • Network monitoring: SolarWinds, Auvik, PRTG, or LogicMonitor
  • PowerShell scripting and automation; network performance analysis and root cause analysis
  • Azure and/or AWS networking concepts; MSP or multi-client environment experience

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and organizational skills
  • Experience mentoring technical staff and leading as a senior escalation resource

Preferred:

  • MSP or service provider background
  • Certifications: CCNP, Extreme Networks, Fortinet, Check Point, Palo Alto, or equivalent
  • Experience with Azure/AWS networking and cybersecurity frameworks
  • Exposure to AI tools, MCP servers, AI agents, or workflow automation

Why CRT? What Does Success Look Like?

At CRT, our engineers aren't siloed. You'll touch more technology across more environments in one year here than most engineers see in five at a single-client company. We invest in your growth through professional development, certification support, and a culture built on curiosity, accountability, and excellence. If that excites you, you'll fit right in.

In this role, success means delivering reliable, secure network environments; resolving complex problems efficiently; elevating your teammates; and consistently embodying We Care, Deliver Wow with Service, and Be Curious.

Please note: This position is open to current Utah residents only. We do not offer relocation assistance, and out-of-state applicants will not be considered.
