Senior Automation Engineering Technician

As a Senior Automation Engineering Technician, you will join our Consumable and Automation Engineering team and bring your hands-on experience to support maintaining, building, and developing the automation equipment used in consumable manufacturing.

You are highly skilled in the operation, maintenance, and construction of mechanical and electromechanical systems. As a Senior Automation Engineering Technician, you will support the Consumable and Automation Engineering team by maintaining automation equipment, building new automation systems, and developing next-generation automation solutions. 

Responsibilities 

  • Own the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of automation equipment used in consumable manufacturing to maximize uptime and performance 
  • Build and assemble automation systems, fixtures, and tooling to support new and existing manufacturing processes 
  • Support the development of next-generation automation equipment from concept through commissioning 
  • Develop and execute equipment IQ/OQ validation protocols 
  • Track and communicate equipment issues and operational findings to engineers; collaborate with the team to drive solutions 
  • Assist with management of the engineering labs including safety, inventory, and cleanliness 
  • Execute engineering tests with limited supervision to collect equipment performance data or to support automation development activities 
  • Assist engineers with development of test specifications, manufacturing instructions, and standard operating procedures 
  • Assist with procurement and tracking of spare parts and engineering inventory 
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA, OSHA, lock-out, and other applicable safety standards

  • Are a self-starter with a desire to build equipment and processes that help improve patient outcomes 
  • Troubleshoot problems systematically and methodically, basing decisions on evidence 
  • Have strong time management skills and communicate conflicts to management and the team 
  • Interpret documentation including assembly drawings, CAD models, cable drawings, electrical schematics, and Bills of Materials to execute assembly, repair, and procurement tasks 
  • Use basic hand and bench tools, multimeters, calipers, drill presses, and standard shop equipment with high proficiency 
  • Have experience with basic shop chemicals and understand the use of corresponding Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) 
  • Use Word and Excel for tracking work and communicating results 

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Skills 

  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Minimum 8 years total experience in an R&D or automation/manufacturing environment, or assembly-related technical trade 
  • Experience using measurement devices such as dial indicators and digital multimeters 
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs. 

Skills or Attributes Considered a Plus:  

  • Can use standard machine shop equipment such as mills and lathes 
  • Experience with automated manufacturing equipment (robotics, motion systems, heat sealers, liquid handling) 
  • Experience with PLCs, motion controllers, or other automation controls 
  • Experience with oscilloscopes, signal generators, and specialized test equipment 
  • Soldering, PCBA and harness rework 
  • Experience with controls cabinets, including controls wiring, labeling, and schematic capture 
  • Experience working on industrial automation equipment such as compressors, pneumatic and servo systems, heat sealers, presses, liquid dispensers, or pick-and-place machines 
  • Associate's degree in applied science, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology or similar, or Certificate in Technical trade 
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering may be considered in place of years of work experience
