What is a moonlighting physician?

A moonlighting physician is a licensed doctor who takes on additional work outside their primary job, often to gain extra income or experience. These roles can be part-time, per diem, or temporary and may include working in urgent care, telemedicine, hospitals, or clinics. Moonlighting is common among residents, fellows, and fully licensed physicians who want to supplement their earnings. However, residents must check their program’s policies and duty hour restrictions before taking on extra work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a moonlighting physician?

A Moonlighting Physician thrives with a valid medical license, broad clinical expertise, and the ability to provide independent patient care, often while still in residency or shortly after. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), hospital policies, and required certifications such as ACLS and BLS is common. Exceptional time management, adaptability, and professional communication skills help physicians excel in balancing multiple commitments and collaborating with diverse teams. These abilities are essential for delivering high-quality patient care outside of typical work hours and integrating smoothly into new clinical environments.

What are the typical work arrangements and scheduling expectations for moonlighting physicians?

Moonlighting Physicians usually work flexible, part-time shifts outside their primary job or residency program, with schedules often including nights, weekends, or holidays. This role allows physicians to gain additional clinical experience, supplement their income, and work in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, urgent care centers, or clinics. While moonlighting provides valuable autonomy and learning opportunities, it also requires careful scheduling to avoid fatigue and meet institutional requirements. Physicians should confirm that their primary employer or training program permits moonlighting and clarify any relevant policies before accepting extra shifts.
