Job description

13-Week Contract \u007C Full-Time Days \u007C Bethesda, Maryland

We are seeking one experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse to provide safe, high-quality perioperative care at the NIH Clinical Center. This is a 13-week contract assignment with the possibility of a long-term or permanent full-time opportunity based on performance and continued staffing needs.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday

  • 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

  • Six to eight on-call shifts per month

  • Weekend and holiday on-call coverage required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active, valid, and unrestricted RN license issued by at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth

  • Associate degree, nursing diploma, or bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution

  • Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN

  • At least two years of current hospital-based operating room nursing experience

  • Current Basic Life Support certification

  • ACLS certification if required by the client

  • Demonstrated current competency in perioperative nursing

  • Effective English communication skills

  • Computer literacy and proficiency with electronic clinical documentation

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident/Green Card status

Preferred Qualification

  • Current CNOR certification

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate perioperative nursing care

  • Prepare the operating room, equipment, supplies, and documentation for scheduled procedures

  • Perform circulating nurse responsibilities in accordance with facility policies and professional standards

  • Confirm patient identity, consent, surgical site, allergies, and procedural readiness

  • Participate in surgical safety checks, including time-outs and instrument, sponge, and sharps counts

  • Maintain sterile technique and promptly address breaks in the sterile field

  • Position and protect patients safely throughout surgical procedures

  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered and within the RN’s authorized scope of practice

  • Monitor patient condition and respond promptly to clinical changes or emergencies

  • Coordinate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, nurses, and other members of the perioperative team

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation

  • Follow NIH infection-control, patient-safety, and professional practice requirements

  • Respond within the required timeframe when assigned to on-call coverage

  • Participate in required orientation, training, and competency activities

Additional Requirements

Selected candidates must satisfy NIH credentialing, health, immunization, security, fingerprinting, background-investigation, and facility-access requirements. All licenses, certifications, competencies, and health documentation must remain current throughout the assignment.
