Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor
Location: Dallas, TX

Position Overview
A leading U.S. manufacturer in the building materials industry is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor for its production facility in Dallas, TX. This role oversees technicians responsible for troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of instrumentation, control devices, and electrical utility systems. The supervisor also directs automation initiatives involving PLC/HMI programming, hardware upgrades, and distribution improvements.
This position is part of the Engineering Department and typically operates Monday-Friday on day shift; however, flexibility for extended hours and on-call work is required.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership & Project Execution
  • Lead and manage electrical, instrumentation, and controls improvement initiatives.
  • Direct daily activities of controls and automation technicians executing improvement projects.
  • Ensure timely, organized execution of automation and electrical projects through internal resources or external partners.
  • Collaborate with production leadership to diagnose and resolve controls-related issues affecting uptime and throughput.
Technical & Maintenance Oversight
  • Assist with scheduling maintenance, repairs, and installation of control systems and instrumentation to support uninterrupted production.
  • Provide expert technical support for complex electrical and controls issues and implement corrective actions that prevent recurrence.
  • Address logistical or technical barriers encountered during improvement projects.
  • Guide and support maintenance teams on main electrical distribution systems and MCC infrastructure.
Continuous Improvement & Standards
  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs in coordination with engineering and maintenance teams.
  • Analyze production, quality, and maintenance data to prioritize activities and identify areas for controls enhancement.
  • Recommend and implement new processes and procedures to reduce costs, improve reliability, and optimize labor and materials.
  • Lead or support continuous improvement efforts using structured problem-solving methodologies.
Team Development & Compliance
  • Train, mentor, and supervise team members to strengthen technical capabilities and support consistent performance.
  • Maintain compliance with internal electrical safety requirements and lead annual electrical safety training.
  • Review and approve timesheets, PTO requests, and personnel coverage plans.

Qualifications
Required
  • 5-10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • High school diploma required; Associate degree in a technical field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and hands-on controls experience considered.
  • Strong PLC programming background (Siemens preferred).
  • Experience with HMI development (Aveva preferred).
  • Proficiency with electrical design tools (AutoCAD or similar 2D CAD software).
  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical distribution, safe troubleshooting practices, and NEC standards.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for specialized training or professional development.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to climb, bend, kneel, crawl, squat, and access equipment in elevated or confined spaces.
  • Must frequently lift/move up to 10 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs, with assistance for heavier loads.
  • Work may involve exposure to:
    • Moving mechanical equipment
    • Heights
    • Dust, fumes, and chemicals
    • High temperatures
    • Electrical hazards
    • Elevated noise levels
  • Must understand risks and follow all required safety protocols, including PPE use.
