What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an experienced R&D Engineer to serve as the PRT Lead (R&D Systems Engineer) for the Modular Telemetry Team, providing technical leadership for a team of engineers supporting design maturation, qualification, and transition to production. The selected candidate will finalize the design and coordinate closely with Systems teams, KCNSC, and other partners to ensure production readiness.
On any given day, the PRT Lead may be called to:
  • Serve as the primary technical representative for the Modular Telemetry Team with Systems, LLNL, NNSA, and production agency partners.
  • Partner with program management and design leads to develop and maintain integrated schedules and execution plans; track progress and remove barriers to delivery.
  • Represent telemetry at PRT and working group meetings; provide technical input, capture action items, and ensure timely closure.
  • Partner closely with Systems teams to ensure requirements, interfaces, and verification approaches are aligned across the program.
  • Drive alignment with Systems teams on requirements, interfaces, and verification/validation approaches.
  • Perform and/or guide system architecture assessments and trade studies.
  • Provide technical input to qualification plans, verification approaches, and testing to demonstrate compliance with requirements.
  • Lead development, coordination, and negotiation of interface requirements (including inter-team and external interfaces).
  • Support production readiness activities, including engagement with KCNSC on manufacturability and process planning.

The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Livermore, CA facility.

Salary Range
$139,900 - $280,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Position requires an active DOE L-level security clearance or equivalent to start and the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Significant experience leading technical execution for complex hardware systems from design through qualification and production transition.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership: prioritizing work, driving closure of actions/issues, leading technical reviews, and coordinating across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience with requirements development/management, interface definition/control, and verification planning (V&V) for hardware systems.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware integration, functional test, and troubleshooting (e.g., printed wiring assemblies and/or embedded systems).
  • Experience coordinating with external stakeholders/customers and presenting technical status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment and collaborate with internal organizations and external production facilities and suppliers.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation (requirements/interface docs, test plans/reports, decision records).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, and production.
  • Familiarity with development of specifications for components.
  • Top-notch verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.
  • Currently holding an active security clearance; DOE Q or DOD TS.

About Our Team
Organization 8468, Telemetry Engineering 6 - along with sister departments 8436, 8434, 8437, 8462 and 8465 and has responsibility for the design, development, and qualification of weapon system instrumentation (or telemetry systems) for use in Joint Test Assemblies (JTAs) for the entire US nuclear arsenal. The JTA program is a cornerstone of the Stockpile Evaluation Program and allows critical assessment of the weapon system, DoD platform, and support personnel performance. To fulfill its mission responsibilities, Organization 8468 employs a diverse and talented group of electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, system engineers and technologists. The Organization collaborates with other NW groups within Sandia and across the Nuclear Weapons Complex, including NNSA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the production agencies (National Security Center and Pantex), and the DoD. Organization 08468 is also expected to have significant interactions with other DOE Laboratories and other NNSA entities (beyond the NW Complex), the DoD, and other government agencies.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
