What is modular robotics?

Modular robotics is a field of robotics focused on creating robots from multiple, independent modules that can connect, disconnect, and reconfigure themselves to perform different tasks. Each module usually contains its own power source, sensors, and actuators, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in building various robotic structures. This approach enables rapid prototyping, scalability, and adaptability for tasks ranging from industrial automation to exploration. Modular robots can self-repair or adapt to new environments by rearranging their modules. The technology is used in research, education, and increasingly in commercial applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modular robotics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modular Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are typically required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for innovating and collaborating on complex modular systems. These competencies ensure the successful design, integration, and deployment of adaptable robotic solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in modular robotics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in modular robotics often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless communication between modules, managing complex integration tasks, and troubleshooting hardware or software compatibility issues. Addressing these challenges usually involves close collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. Staying up-to-date with the latest protocols and modular standards, as well as adopting robust testing and simulation methods, can greatly improve system reliability and efficiency. Effective project management and open communication are also key to successfully navigating these hurdles.

What is the difference between Modular Robotics vs Robotics Technician?

AspectModular RoboticsRobotics Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in robotics, engineering, or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's in robotics, electronics, or mechanical tech
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing, education, or design settingsIndustrial, manufacturing plants, or service environments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in education, research, and custom automation projectsEmployed in factories, automation companies, and maintenance

Modular Robotics focuses on designing and creating adaptable robotic systems, often emphasizing innovation and research. Robotics Technicians primarily maintain, troubleshoot, and operate robotic systems in industrial settings. While both roles require technical knowledge, Modular Robotics is more design-oriented, whereas Robotics Technicians focus on operational support and maintenance.

Job description

OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorldโ€™s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and further on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in lifeโ€‘threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.

We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics realโ€‘time system platform for control, decision making and execution.

OffWorld is seeking a talented and motivated Robotics Test & Integration Engineer to join a fastโ€‘moving team working to create advanced robotic and space systems. As a Robotics Test & Integration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and executing testing and integration activities. These testing and integration activities span virtual tests (e.g., simulation), subsystem and system testing of robotic platforms at both testing facilities and fieldโ€‘deployed sites (open pit and subterranean mines). You will work closely with crossโ€‘functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, and project managers, to ensure that testing, integration, and overall development goals are met to the highest standards.

Responsibilities
  • Test Planning and Execution: Create detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts, ensuring adequate coverage of all robotic system components and functionalities. Coordinate and execute testing activities, including functional testing, regression testing, performance testing, and stress testing.
  • Test Automation: Identify opportunities for test automation and develop automated test scripts using appropriate tools and frameworks. Continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing processes through automation.
  • Test Reporting and Documentation: Analyze test results and prepare comprehensive test reports, documenting any defects, issues, or areas of improvement. Maintain detailed documentation of test procedures, configurations, and test environments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with crossโ€‘functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to understand project requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment between development and testing activities. Communicate testing progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in robotics testing methodologies, tools, and technologies. Identify areas for process improvement, propose innovative solutions, and drive the implementation of best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, robotics, or software / electrical / mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in (mobile and/or manipulator) robotics, or similar.
  • 2+ years of handsโ€‘on testing of (mobile and/or manipulator) robots.
  • Strong knowledge of robotic systems, sensors, perception, and control algorithms across software, hardware, and integratedโ€‘system development.
  • Proficient in programming languages commonly used in robotics, such as C++, Python, or Java.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar robotics middleware.
  • Experience with robotics simulation environments, such as ROS Gazebo, and scenarioโ€‘based regression testing.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, git, docker, and Linux commandโ€‘line operations and debugging.
  • Strong analytical and problemโ€‘solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities, with the capability to collaborate effectively with crossโ€‘functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks based on project goals and timelines.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally approximately 15% of the time.
  • Selfโ€‘driven, passionate, and constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence.
Opportunities
  • Opportunity to sink your teeth into cutting edge industrial robotics problems
  • Opportunity to contribute to the mission of transforming how we mine on Earth today and how we will one day mine on the Moon, asteroids & Mars
  • Opportunity to work with a kind, brilliant and supportive team
  • Opportunity to join the OffWorld team if
    • You are as crazyโ€‘excited about the mission as we are
    • Youโ€™ve demonstrated you are The Right Stuff
Benefits Package
  • Robust medical plan offerings with 0 to limited paycheck deductions
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off
  • 401K Match
