What is the difference between Modular Robotics vs Robotics Technician?

AspectModular RoboticsRobotics Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in robotics, engineering, or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's in robotics, electronics, or mechanical tech
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing, education, or design settingsIndustrial, manufacturing plants, or service environments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in education, research, and custom automation projectsEmployed in factories, automation companies, and maintenance

Modular Robotics focuses on designing and creating adaptable robotic systems, often emphasizing innovation and research. Robotics Technicians primarily maintain, troubleshoot, and operate robotic systems in industrial settings. While both roles require technical knowledge, Modular Robotics is more design-oriented, whereas Robotics Technicians focus on operational support and maintenance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in modular robotics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in modular robotics often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless communication between modules, managing complex integration tasks, and troubleshooting hardware or software compatibility issues. Addressing these challenges usually involves close collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. Staying up-to-date with the latest protocols and modular standards, as well as adopting robust testing and simulation methods, can greatly improve system reliability and efficiency. Effective project management and open communication are also key to successfully navigating these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Modular Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modular Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are typically required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for innovating and collaborating on complex modular systems. These competencies ensure the successful design, integration, and deployment of adaptable robotic solutions in dynamic environments.

What is modular robotics?

Modular robotics is a field of robotics focused on creating robots from multiple, independent modules that can connect, disconnect, and reconfigure themselves to perform different tasks. Each module usually contains its own power source, sensors, and actuators, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in building various robotic structures. This approach enables rapid prototyping, scalability, and adaptability for tasks ranging from industrial automation to exploration. Modular robots can self-repair or adapt to new environments by rearranging their modules. The technology is used in research, education, and increasingly in commercial applications.

Job description

About the Role at RobCo
At RobCo, we develop AI-powered robotic systems that make industrial processes more autonomous, efficient, and scalable. Our Autonomous Manufacturing Platform combines modular industrial hardware with physical AI, enabling rapid deployment and continuous optimization in real production environments.
With locations in Munich, San Francisco, and Austin, and backed by leading investors such as Lightspeed, Lingotto Innovation, and Sequoia, we are working to redefine industrial automation.
At RobCo, we automate the ordinary, so humans can do the extraordinary. To achieve this, we are looking for an ambitious (Senior) Technical Pre-Sales Engineer - Robotics to help us establish RobCo as leading provider of automation solutions.
This role sits right at the intersection of customer needs and cutting-edge robotics technology. In our Pre-Sales Organization, you will transform customer challenges into tailored automation concepts - combining creativity, technical expertise, and a consultative approach.
What makes this role unique: This is not a classic sales engineering or system integrator position. At RobCo, you design real automation solutions that combine modular robotics hardware with AI-driven software (e.g., vision, motion, autonomous behaviors).
Working closely with Account Executives, you translate customer manufacturing challenges into feasible, deployable automation concepts: cell layouts, robot and peripheral selection, feasibility checks, and proof-of-value solutions that clearly demonstrate technical and business impact.
As part of a robotics manufacturer, you work directly with the product and engineering teams behind the robot - without the constraints of off-the-shelf systems. You have real ownership and creative freedom to design solutions that showcase software-defined, modular robotics.
This role can be based at our Austin, TX HQ or fully remote within the United States.
Your Responsibilities
  • Consult & create - Partner with customers and sales colleagues to understand requirements and develop tailored and feasible automation concepts.
  • Design solutions - Translate customer needs into technically sound, cost-effective robotic automation designs.
  • Demonstrate value - Prepare and deliver compelling demos, simulations, and proof-of-value concepts.
  • Bridge worlds - Act as the technical voice in sales conversations, making complex topics simple and tangible.
  • Collaborate & coordinate - Work closely with internal stakeholders (engineering, product, solutions, operations) to align on deliverables and timelines.
  • Gather insights - Capture customer feedback and feed it directly into product development for continuous improvement.

We're looking for someone who has:
  • Several years experience in technical pre-sales, sales engineering, applications engineering, automation engineering, or related fields - preferably in robotics / industrial automation.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robots and common automation components such as pneumatic cylinders, conveyors, vision/camera systems, grippers, or linear axes.
  • Strong CAD and/or simulation skills (e.g., Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks).
  • The ability to think creatively and translate customer needs into practical, scalable solutions.
  • Excellent presentation and storytelling skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort working directly with customers, including on-site visits (travel approx. 20-30%).

Why join RobCo?
  • Develop modular, software-defined robotics solutions with us that set new standards in automation.
  • Help us build robots equipped with state-of-the-art AI that perceive their environment, analyze data, and make intelligent decisions in real time.
  • As part of a very dynamic and fast-growing scale-up, you will take on responsibility from day one, drive your own projects, and see the direct impact of your work.
  • Flat hierarchies, open communication, and regular 360° feedback enable fast decisions and support your professional and personal development.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package - including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus a 401(k) plan.
  • Unlimited paid time off incl. major holidays.
  • Company-sponsored onboarding and team offsites in Germany.

About RobCo
RobCo was founded in late 2020 in Munich and develops AI-powered robotic systems that bring learning and autonomy to industrial processes. The Autonomous Manufacturing Platform combines modular industrial hardware with a software architecture for physical AI, enabling rapid implementation, continuous optimization, and application-specific performance.
Through a Robotics-as-a-Service model, RobCo helps industrial companies automate manual tasks while reducing operational complexity and risk. The company covers a wide range of industrial applications, including machine tending, palletizing, dispensing, and welding.
RobCo operates in Europe and the USA, with locations in Munich, San Francisco, and Austin. The company is backed by leading global investors, including Lightspeed, Lingotto Innovation, and Sequoia.
Don't meet every single requirement? If you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
At RobCo, applicants are selected regardless of ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation. All decisions throughout the recruitment process are based solely on applicants' qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience, as well as relevant business requirements.
