What is modular robotics?

Modular robotics is a field of robotics focused on creating robots from multiple, independent modules that can connect, disconnect, and reconfigure themselves to perform different tasks. Each module usually contains its own power source, sensors, and actuators, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in building various robotic structures. This approach enables rapid prototyping, scalability, and adaptability for tasks ranging from industrial automation to exploration. Modular robots can self-repair or adapt to new environments by rearranging their modules. The technology is used in research, education, and increasingly in commercial applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modular robotics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modular Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, computer science, and robotics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, programming languages like Python or C++, and experience with robotics platforms such as ROS are typically required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for innovating and collaborating on complex modular systems. These competencies ensure the successful design, integration, and deployment of adaptable robotic solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in modular robotics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in modular robotics often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless communication between modules, managing complex integration tasks, and troubleshooting hardware or software compatibility issues. Addressing these challenges usually involves close collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. Staying up-to-date with the latest protocols and modular standards, as well as adopting robust testing and simulation methods, can greatly improve system reliability and efficiency. Effective project management and open communication are also key to successfully navigating these hurdles.

What is the difference between Modular Robotics vs Robotics Technician?

AspectModular RoboticsRobotics Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in robotics, engineering, or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's in robotics, electronics, or mechanical tech
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing, education, or design settingsIndustrial, manufacturing plants, or service environments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in education, research, and custom automation projectsEmployed in factories, automation companies, and maintenance

Modular Robotics focuses on designing and creating adaptable robotic systems, often emphasizing innovation and research. Robotics Technicians primarily maintain, troubleshoot, and operate robotic systems in industrial settings. While both roles require technical knowledge, Modular Robotics is more design-oriented, whereas Robotics Technicians focus on operational support and maintenance.

Job description

Position Summary
We're looking for a Full Stack Developer to help expand and refine the LEXSO (Layered Extended Security Operations) platform-a modular, microservice-based system designed to orchestrate real-time data from sensors, cameras, AI engines, and automation tools across security operations environments.
As a full stack engineer, you'll contribute across both frontend and backend domains, building scalable microservices, powerful APIs, and responsive user interfaces. You'll work alongside specialists in automation, sensor fusion, and distributed systems to solve complex challenges in a modern DevOps environment.
This is a great opportunity for someone with a few years of experience who wants to take ownership of major features and help drive architectural and system-level improvements in a fast-moving, impactful platform.
RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Design and develop backend services using FastAPI, Kafka, PostgreSQL, and Docker.
  • Build and maintain frontend interfaces using React, TypeScript, and real-time visual components (e.g., WebSockets, Mapbox).
  • Create and maintain REST APIs and Kafka consumers for automation and alerting workflows.
  • Integrate a wide range of devices and sensors (e.g., PTZ cameras, LiDAR, radar, drones) into reusable service modules.
  • Contribute to component design, service orchestration, and data modeling.
  • Participate in sprint planning, peer reviews, and CI/CD deployment workflows.
  • Debug, test, and optimize both backend and frontend features.
  • Collaborate using Git, GitHub, Jira, Confluence, and automated build pipelines.
  • Work is typically based in a remote environment and subject to frequent interruptions. Business work hours are Monday-Friday standard core hours, however some extended or weekend hours may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency with Python (preferably FastAPI or similar frameworks)
  • Proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript and React or another frontend framework
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and schema design
  • Experience with Docker, Git-based workflows, and Agile teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to software quality
  • Preferred:
    • Exposure to:
      • Kafka, MongoDB, or OpenSearch/Elastic
      • js, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui
      • OAuth/JWT authentication flows (e.g., via Keycloak, Auth0)
      • Real-time systems: WebSockets, pub/sub architectures
      • IoT, robotics, or physical device integrations
      • CI/CD tooling: GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Kubernetes
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field is required. Candidates with equivalent degrees (e.g., Robotics, Mechatronics, Data Science, Cybersecurity) will also be considered.
