Model Systems Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

Job description

Are you passionate about human space exploration, understanding the origins of the universe, and working with a passionate and diverse team to make a difference? If you are, we need you!

We need your talent, teamwork, and energy to help us achieve great things that inspire people all over the globe. We need you to bring creative ideas and diverse backgrounds to help us envision, shape, and deliver systems that will enable the exploration of space while benefiting people here on Earth. We are excited about what we do, and we need you on our team as we take on exciting challenges for NASA's pursuits in deep space exploration. As NASA's largest engineering solutions provider working together with NASA at centers across the United States.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Summer 2026 Intern - Model-Based Systems Engineering / Digital Systems Engineering to join the team!

We are seeking a motivated summer intern to support Model-Based Systems Engineering and Digital Systems Engineering activities for complex aerospace and spaceflight systems. This role will provide hands-on exposure to systems engineering practices, digital engineering tools, requirements development, architecture modeling, interface definition, verification planning, and system lifecycle support.

The intern will work with experienced systems engineers to help develop, organize, and maintain engineering products that support technical decision-making across multidisciplinary project teams. This is an opportunity to gain practical experience applying systems engineering principles to real-world NASA and aerospace projects.

This is a temporary role not to exceed 13 weeks.

The Summer 2026 Intern - Model-Based Systems Engineering / Digital Systems Engineering will support one or more of the following activities:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of MBSE models using tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, SysML, or similar modeling environments.

  • Support requirements organization, traceability, and decomposition using tools such as Jama, DOORS Next, or equivalent requirements management systems.

  • Help develop system architecture products, including functional decompositions, logical architectures, physical architectures, activity diagrams, state diagrams, sequence diagrams, and interface representations.

  • Support digital thread activities by helping connect requirements, models, design products, verification evidence, and project documentation.

  • Assist with data cleanup, model organization, naming conventions, documentation structure, and consistency checks across engineering artifacts.

  • Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, model reviews, and systems engineering working sessions.

  • Support preparation of engineering briefings, model snapshots, status summaries, and technical documentation.

  • Help identify gaps, inconsistencies, or opportunities for improved traceability between requirements, interfaces, verification objectives, and system models.

  • Learn and apply systems engineering standards, best practices, and lifecycle processes in support of spaceflight project execution.

Requisition Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university.
  • Completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Interest in systems engineering, digital engineering, MBSE, aerospace systems, or human spaceflight.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to organize technical information clearly.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Requisition Preferences:

  • Exposure to Model-Based Systems Engineering concepts, SysML, or digital engineering methods.

  • Familiarity with Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, Rhapsody, Capella, or similar modeling tools.

  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Jama, DOORS, DOORS Next, or Polarion.

  • Coursework or project experience involving system architecture, requirements development, verification and validation, interfaces, controls, robotics, spacecraft, or complex engineered systems.

  • Basic understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, design, integration, verification, validation, and operations.

  • Experience with scripting, data analysis, or automation using Python, MATLAB, VBA, or similar tools is a plus.
