Model Systems Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

Job description

Please Note: To conform with the United States Government Space Technology Export Regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., conditional resident, asylee or refugee (protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

In this role, a systems engineer is responsible for utilizing commercial modeling and simulation tools to synthesize conceptual aerospace and defense systems into executable digital models to aid multi-disciplined design teams in quickly and accurately evaluating expected performance against design requirements.  This candidate will be expected to build expertise across commercial digital modeling and simulation tools, in particular leveraging Ansys STK (System Tool Kit) software which delivers a physics-based, mission-centric digital design and test environment for analyzing and designing systems across various domains like space, air, sea, and ground missions.

This candidate will be expected to continually expand and build their knowledge and use of this systems modeling and simulation environment while also incorporating external simulation artifacts from other multi-physics modeling and simulation tools commonly utilized by domain-centric design engineering groups such a CFD tools, mechanical CAD solutions, RF systems design and test tools, optics, and many other engineering discipline focus areas.

It will be critically important for this candidate to be able to communicate with colleagues across multi-disciplines and help incorporate their designs, analysis results, and model anticipated system behaviors through a fully integrated digital simulation approach.  Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices is highly desired.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Effectively leverage a digital modeling and simulation ecosystem of tools to support the design, test, validation and verification needs of internal project team leaders.
  • Proactively identify workflow automations to help establish streamlined processes for repeatable modeling and simulation chains for efficient re-use of established our organization's unique mod/sim techniques.
  • Support briefings to design team leaders to demonstrate/share results during design review milestones.
  • Proactively investigate interoperability across existing design tools that our engineering organization leverages, and suggest/lead identified improvements to help establish and build our end-to-end digital engineering toolchains.
  • Working closely with development and engineering design teams to inject digital modeling and simulation tools into their workflows in non-disruptive ways by helping to lead data pipeline integrations, automations, and routines that increase overall efficiency and shorten design lifecycles.
  • Collaborating with software developers, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to ensure application stability and performance.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrable experience or familiarity with digital systems engineering methodologies.
  • Familiarity with STK and its modules (e.g., Astrogator, SOLIS, TETK) for digital mission engineering is critical.
  • Knowledge of various operating systems, devices, and software applications is expected.
  • Proficiency with common engineering scripting languages (MATLAB, Python, Javascript, and similar).
  • Familiarity (or ability to gain necessary skills) with general engineering design tools commonly used across disciplines such as Fluids, Electronics, Thermal, Optics, and Mechanical tools such as the Ansys tool suites.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering practices and languages (SysML)
  • Proficiency in functional digital systems engineering and understanding of design, test, review methodologies.
  • Experience with test case design and execution, as well as defect tracking and reporting tools.
