Model Systems Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

How does a Model Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What is Model Systems Engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

Job description

Overview

LMI is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support Navy logistics enterprise modernization efforts for the F-35 LogIT program and related sustainment initiatives. As part of a high-performing systems engineering team, this role leads requirements engineering, systems analysis, verification and validation, and test engineering activities across the systems engineering lifecycle and engineering V-model. The candidate will work within Agile and SAFe environments to support stakeholder engagement, operational analysis, requirements traceability, test planning, and systems integration efforts aligned to Navy logistics and sustainment mission objectives. This individual will collaborate closely with Government leadership, operational users, engineers, architects, developers, and test teams to provide technical leadership, disciplined engineering support, and problem solving across complex DoD enterprise environments while helping drive modernization and mission effectiveness across DoD logistics systems.

LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.

Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.

Responsibilities
  • Lead systems engineering activities supporting Navy logistics enterprise modernization efforts for the F-35 LogIT program, with primary responsibility for requirements development, requirements management, verification, validation, and test engineering activities across the engineering V-model.
  • Execute end-to-end systems engineering processes including stakeholder engagement, operational needs analysis, requirements elicitation, decomposition, traceability, and verification planning for enterprise logistics IT systems supporting Naval Aviation operations.
  • Lead and facilitate requirements elicitation sessions with Government stakeholders, operational users, functional SMEs, and technical teams to define and refine system capabilities, interfaces, workflows, and operational requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee structured requirements management processes ensuring clear documentation, bidirectional traceability, and alignment between operational needs, system capabilities, and testing activities.
  • Perform business process analysis and operational workflow modeling to support modernization and integration of Navy logistics and sustainment systems.
  • Lead development and execution of verification and validation strategies, including test planning, test case development, test procedure execution, requirements verification, defect tracking, and assessment of system performance against defined requirements.
  • Coordinate systems engineering activities across Agile development teams within a SAFe 6 framework, ensuring alignment between requirements, architecture, implementation, and testing throughout Program Increment execution.
  • Support system design reviews, solution analysis, and engineering trade studies to improve logistics readiness, asset visibility, maintenance operations, and supply chain effectiveness.
  • Analyze existing logistics and sustainment processes and translate findings into actionable system and process improvement recommendations.
  • Provide technical systems engineering expertise supporting integration efforts across Navy, DoD, and contractor organizations.
  • Support program management activities including engineering planning, risk identification, status reporting, and development of technical briefings and decision-support materials for Government leadership.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation including requirements specifications, interface documentation, test plans, verification reports, engineering analyses, and briefing materials.
