Job description

Job Summary:
Responsible for the management of enterprise-wide model risks team memberd with the Pinnacle development, deployment, and maintenance of qualitative and quantitative models to avoid financial loss, poor business and strategic decision-making, and reputational risk. Develops, maintains and implements the Bank's Model Risk Management Program in accordance with SR 2011-07. Collaborates with senior executives and leadership to enable innovation to advance corporate strategic objectives using advanced methods such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), while providing effective challenge to produce appropriate changes within the model life cycle.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the model risk management framework to include evaluation of model development processes, model implementation and use, and effective validation. Develops and maintains appropriate governance, policies, and controls for model risk management.
  • Chairs and facilitates the Model Risk Management Committee. Presents relevant model risk topics to Operational Risk Committee quarterly. Presents, as needed, with Head of Enterprise & Financial Risk to Enterprise Risk Committee and Risk Committee of the Board.
  • Serves as a liaison to bank regulators and auditors on model risk management.
  • Serves as model risk subject matter expert on enterprise risk programs, including completing model risk assessments for New Business Activities (NBA) and assessing model risk due diligence questionnaires for Third Party Risk Management (TPRM).
  • Oversees the independent validations of material models within the firm, to include those that inform capital decisions, credit approval and product pricing, the allowance for credit losses (ACL), management of liquidity and interest rate risk, fraud detection, marketing, and both BSA/AML and Consumer Compliance. Validations include assessment of model conceptual soundness to include the evaluation of data and assumptions as well as computational accuracy; ongoing monitoring including confirming that the model is appropriately implemented, utilized and performing as intended; and performing outcomes analysis (such as back-testing).
  • Using advanced skills, coaches validation team to documents and presents observations to model owners and users in business friendly terms so that the very complex information can be understood by a broad audience of varying depths of complex analytical skills, recommends management action plans and tracks remediation progress. Presents the findings of these independent validations to executive and senior management and the board of directors, as needed. Consults with model owners, developers and users on the design of effective model operational controls.
  • Provides mentorship and recommendations for ongoing development and refinement of model lifecycle quality monitoring, reporting frameworks, and methodologies. Partners actively with data science and technology teams for designing and using model operations platforms. Acquires or develops innovative methodologies for model governance and model risk, and applies industry standards for data and system technologies and analytics methodologies.
  • While maintaining a standard of effective challenge through the model lifecycle, builds strong working relationships with key model stakeholders to include business unit leaders, model owners, developers and users. Facilitates communication between model validation teams and other stakeholders.
  • Uses business acumen and provides subject matter expertise for technology initiatives intended to facilitate corporate strategic objectives that utilize analytics such as AI/ML. Leverages a network of industry professionals to stay current on emerging trends and continually bring best practices to execution.
  • Develops a high performing team focused on building strong analytical, technical, and domain knowledge while sustaining validation production and retention. Recruits, manages, and coaches a team of senior validation analysts to accomplish validation engagements and perform model governance. Takes personal initiative and is a positive example for others.
  • Maintains an inventory of models enterprise-wide, including those developed in-house and those purchased from or developed by business partners or consultants.
  • Manages the annual performance management and merit processes for direct and indirect reports. Coaches and develops team members and builds a work environment where team members are engaged and feel a positive sense of achievement about their role in the firm. Works closely with Human Resources regarding employee relations, compensation, training, posting and filling vacant positions and other Human Resources related matters.
  • Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Firm authority in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education: BS in quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Economics. MS/MBA with a focus in a related quantitative discipline.
Minimum Experience: 12+ years building and leading analytic functions in financial services including managing data scientists and analysts, of which at least 3 years consists of model validation and governance experience. At least 5 years of first line senior management experience within financial services. Regular office environment;
