Position:                     Summer Camp Counselor      

Department:              Youth & Camp

Classification:            Seasonal, non-benefitted, At-Will, June 2026 - August 2026

Reports to:                 Reports to the Youth & Camp Director

Summary:

Under the direction of the Camp & Youth Director, the Camp Counselor will interact with and supervise campers’ grades 6th-8th grade. Camp Counselor must possess a valid driver license and be willing to drive vehicles with campers to off-site field trip locations during the camp week. Counselors will assist with planning and implementing daily camp activities for campers. Individuals must ensure day camp operates in a safe manner at all times, supervise participants while taking part in off and on-site activities, including but not limited to field trips, art, swimming, games, sports, etc. Camp Counselors are expected to uphold, and role model the values of Camp Shalom. Time commitment for this position is 8:30am-5:00pm Monday Through Friday during the months of June-August. Must be able to commit to a majority of the 9 weeks, June 1st – July 31st, 2026, with the option to remain on through August 14th.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Must have knowledge of campers’ whereabouts at all times.
  • Actively facilitate camper development in Outdoor Recreation Activities, Social Skill Development, Values, Multi-Cultural and Environmental Awareness. 
  • Maintain a positive attitude and conduct with the staff team as a positive role model. 
  • Assist in development, implementation, and evaluation of daily day camp activities. 
  • Adhere to and enforce Camp policies and procedures and operate day camp activities in a safe manner at all times.
  • Attendance at staff meetings and pre-camp training. (Mandatory) 
  • Be prompt to all work assignments and adhere to day camp daily schedule.
  • Maintains all camp equipment and supplies. 
  • Care about and pay attention to campers’ needs. 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Camp Leadership
  • Ability to drive a large SUV or vehicle with at least nine seats on surface streets and/or highways, including winding roads, for up to eight youth passengers.
  • Oversee a field trip-based program, where you must supervise middle school campers while out on public field trips, such as boating, kayaking, mini-golf, theme parks, etc.
  • Be comfortable enforcing positive behaviors and dealing with difficult situations which can arise.

Qualifications and competencies:

Education and/or experience:

  • Minimum of 21 years of age with a valid Driver's License
  • Experience and comfortable driving larger vehicles up to 9 passengers.
  • ECE units or Recreation units desired.
  • Experience working with youth preferred.

Specific Certification Requirements:

  • Current American Red Cross CPR for Child and Adult Certification or
    willingness to obtain.
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain.
  • If over 18 years old - Completion and clearance of background fingerprint assessment via the JSV Specific Live scan location.

** Employees at JSV may have availability to attend in-house Certification courses, please check with the Camp Director as to availability.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, members, parents, donors, and the general public.
