What is a mobile service technician?

Mobile service technicians are professionals who travel to a customer's location to diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment, vehicles, or devices, rather than working from a fixed service center. They often work in industries such as automotive repair, electronics, or appliance servicing. Their primary advantage is providing convenient, on-site support, saving customers the hassle of transporting products. Mobile service technicians typically bring the necessary tools and parts with them to complete most jobs during their visit.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile service technician?

To thrive as a Mobile Service Technician, you need strong diagnostic abilities, hands-on technical knowledge in automotive or equipment repair, and typically a relevant certification or vocational training. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, mobile service management apps, and vehicle repair systems is essential. Excellent customer service, time management, and problem-solving skills help technicians build trust and adapt to client needs on the go. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality repairs, customer satisfaction, and success in a field-based, dynamic work environment.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by mobile service technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Mobile Service Technicians often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex issues on-site without access to a full workshop, managing tight schedules, and adapting to different working environments. To address these, it's important to stay organized, keep up-to-date with technical training, and maintain a well-stocked service vehicle. Communication skills are also crucial, as technicians regularly interact with customers and coordinate with office staff to ensure efficient service delivery.

Job description

Position Description:
At ServiceTrade, you'll build technology that matters - for your career, your team, and the thousands of commercial contractors who rely on our platform every day. We're on a mission to partner with commercial trades to deliver technology that enhances technician productivity, improves customer experiences, and drives scalable growth.
We're looking for a Mobile Architect who's excited to make an impact. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the strategic design, development, and evolution of ServiceTrade's native iOS and Android applications. This role bridges product vision with technical excellence, ensuring our mobile platform scales reliably, performs optimally, and delivers great experiences for field service technicians on the job. You'll co-own the mobile technical roadmap, establish engineering standards across both platforms, and mentor a high-performing team toward scalable, maintainable solutions.
Why ServiceTrade:
You'll belong here from the start.
We bring together kind, curious people with diverse perspectives and trust them with meaningful work. You'll have ownership, clarity, and support to solve real problems, make a visible impact for our customers, and continue growing as your role evolves.
On the Mobile team, you'll have the opportunity to set the technical direction for native platforms that thousands of field technicians rely on every day. You'll have real ownership over architecture, tooling, and how the team works, including shaping what AI-assisted development looks like at ServiceTrade. This isn't a role where you inherit a roadmap - you help build it.
About You:
You've spent years deep in native iOS and Android development, and you love the challenge of getting offline sync and data consistency right. You think in systems, not just screens, and you're genuinely excited about AI tooling - curious enough to explore it, experienced enough to know where it shines. You lead by making others better, and you're just as comfortable explaining a technical trade-off to leadership as you are diving into the code yourself.
Key Responsibilities and Activities:
Strategic & Architecture Leadership
  • Own the mobile platform technical roadmap aligned with product and business strategy; evaluate and recommend adoption of emerging technologies and frameworks
  • Define and evolve mobile architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI) across both platforms; drive stronger layering and separation of concerns for maintainability and modernization
  • Design and maintain modular, well-structured codebases that enable team scalability and code reuse; establish architectural guidelines and review practices
  • Champion native platform best practices while staying current on the broader mobile ecosystem; inform technology decisions with data-driven analysis
  • Conduct regular architectural reviews and identify optimization opportunities in data flows, user interactions, and system design

Development Leadership & Code Quality
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to mobile developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
  • Lead the mobile team's adoption of AI-assisted development practices; evaluate and introduce agentic workflows, tooling, and new ways of working that raise team velocity and quality
  • Establish and evolve a test automation strategy covering unit and integration testing; collaborate with QA on end-to-end coverage and drive adoption of standards across the team
  • Conduct code reviews and establish coding standards, ensuring adherence to best practices and consistent code quality across the team
  • Collaborate with Design and UX teams to ensure technical implementation aligns with user experience requirements and design systems

CI/CD, DevOps & Release Management
  • Own and continuously improve CI/CD and build pipelines built on GitHub Actions and Fastlane; ensure reliability, speed, and automated quality gates across both platforms
  • Collaborate with Engineering Management on release processes for both Google Play Store and Apple App Store
  • Maintain and evolve our feature flag and remote configuration systems to enable safe, gradual rollouts and quick issue resolution
  • Establish release management best practices and documentation to minimize risk and ensure smooth deployments

Data Synchronization & Offline-First Architecture
  • Own and evolve our offline-first data synchronization architecture to handle varying network conditions and connectivity scenarios
  • Establish and refine strategies for conflict resolution, data consistency, and eventual consistency
  • Define and manage data refresh strategies, caching policies, and local storage optimization

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Product Management to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions, roadmaps, and meaningful user behavior insights
  • Work closely with Backend, API, and Web teams to ensure seamless integration and align on data contracts and API design
  • Coordinate with Customer Support to prioritize technical improvements that drive customer satisfaction and reduce support burden
  • Communicate technical roadmap and architectural decisions to leadership; present options with clear trade-offs and recommendations

Performance, Monitoring & Optimization
  • Own analysis of telemetry data across Kibana, Crashlytics, and Pendo to identify performance issues, crashes, and user behavior patterns; drive resolution and continuous improvement
  • Drive performance optimization across devices and network conditions, including low-bandwidth and intermittent connectivity scenarios
  • Conduct performance profiling and benchmarking to inform architectural and implementation decisions
  • Manage compatibility strategy across supported OS versions and device capabilities

Security & Compliance
  • Collaborate with the Security team to define and promote mobile security best practices, including data encryption, secure storage, and secure authentication patterns
  • Apply OWASP MASVS as a framework for mobile architectural reviews; partner with Security on annual Cobalt pen tests and remediation
  • Evaluate third-party dependencies and SDKs for security risks; establish vetting processes for new tools and libraries

Knowledge and Skills:
Required
  • 7+ years of professional mobile application development experience, with at least 3 years in an architect or technical lead role
  • Proven experience with AI-assisted development tools; pragmatic about their strengths and limitations
  • Demonstrated ability to help engineering teams adopt AI tooling where it genuinely improves output and quality
  • Deep hands-on expertise in native Android development (Kotlin) and iOS development (Swift)
  • Proven experience releasing and managing apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store
  • Strong understanding of mobile architecture patterns, design principles, and scalable code organization
  • Experience designing and implementing offline-first architectures and data synchronization patterns
  • Strong proficiency with REST APIs, backend integration, and asynchronous programming (Combine, Rx, Kotlin Coroutines, or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of mobile security principles, including data encryption, secure storage, and authentication mechanisms
  • Experience owning and improving CI/CD pipelines and build automation for mobile applications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills with demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions and grow team members

Preferred
  • Experience integrating mobile payment solutions such as Stripe or equivalent
  • Familiarity with cross-platform frameworks including .NET MAUI, React Native or Flutter
  • Experience with Google Firebase ecosystem including Crashlytics, Analytics, and Remote Config
  • Familiarity with Pendo or similar product analytics and in-app engagement platforms
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring and profiling tools for mobile applications
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and security testing methodologies (SAST, DAST, dependency scanning)
  • Experience with feature flag management and remote configuration systems
  • Familiarity with SaaS or field service application architecture
  • Prior experience at a growth-stage technology company managing technical scaling challenges
