What does a mobile product designer do?

A Mobile Product Designer is responsible for creating user-friendly and visually appealing interfaces for mobile applications. Their work involves understanding user needs, developing wireframes and prototypes, collaborating with developers, and ensuring the final product provides a seamless experience on mobile devices. They also conduct user research and usability testing to refine their designs and make data-driven decisions. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of mobile apps to meet business and user goals.

What are some common challenges mobile product designers face when balancing user experience with technical constraints?

Mobile Product Designers often encounter the challenge of creating user-friendly and visually appealing interfaces while working within the limitations of device performance, screen size, and platform guidelines. Collaborating closely with developers, they must find innovative solutions that meet both user needs and technical feasibility. Effective communication and flexibility are key, as requirements may evolve based on feedback from stakeholders or technical teams. Navigating these constraints helps designers create intuitive and high-performing mobile products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Product Designer, you need strong proficiency in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, a portfolio demonstrating mobile app projects, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Expertise in design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and familiarity with prototyping tools and platform guidelines (iOS/Android) are typically required. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help designers translate user needs into intuitive, visually appealing mobile experiences. These skills ensure the creation of effective, user-centered mobile products that meet business goals and delight users.

Job description

About Sidecar

Individual car ownership has dominated transportation for decades. What once stood for mobility, convenience, and expedition has given rise to high costs, sickening pollution, and crushing gridlock. We're here to rethink transportation through a commitment to human connection and shared experiences.

Sidecar’s ride marketplace connects everyday drivers in their own car with people nearby for safe and affordable rides. People can choose a ride based on vehicle, price and ETA using their smartphone.
In May 2014, Sidecar pioneered Shared Rides, which matches people with a nearby rider heading the same direction and cuts the cost in half.
Sidecar is available in ten U.S. markets and has completed millions of rides. Company investors include Union Square Ventures, Avalon Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Google Ventures and Sir Richard Branson.

About the Role
Please note that this role is not for a physical product or industrial designer, although we will consider candidates with that background who have ample experience in software design.

We’re seeking an experienced product designer to join our efforts in pushing the bounds of how technology enables transportation.The ideal candidate has a talent for all aspects of the design process, from research, to interaction and visual design. Our product design team researches problems, talks to drivers and riders, considers business/financial implications, solves challenging interaction puzzles, furiously creates prototypes to communicate an idea to various teams and applies beautiful visual design to tie it all together — we do not view design as an afterthought. This designer will partner with the product team and its two fellow designers to foster design culture and will help create beautiful visual systems that showcase a suite of world-class mobile products.

While product design is at the core of this role, a solid understanding of communication and the creative process is key. Collectively, the product and communication design teams serve as the creative core of the organization and collaborate to ensure the highest quality of deliverables to support a world-class experience.

About You

You’re passionate about design and creating products that customers adore. You enjoy talking and working with users to identify their pain points. You are receptive to feedback, can participate in productive debate via critiques and express unwavering humility throughout. You always keep in mind internal stakeholders when going through your design process. You like working in a multi-discipline team to effectively solve problems via technology, but ultimately understand that we're creating tools to enable human connection.

Education & Experience

  • An exceptional portfolio of (shipped) creative product design that showcases your interaction and visual design talents;

  • A passion for solving complex interaction problems within real-world constraints;

  • Adobe Creative Suite mastery (Photoshop, Illustrator, et al.);

  • Ability to self-manage multiple projects, deadlines and deliverables;

  • Experience with shipping software (preferably at a well-known software organization, either big or small);
  • BA/BFA in interactive design (or related design discipline) and/or 5+ years relevant experience.

Compensation & Perks

  • Full-time salary negotiable based on experience;

  • Stock options in a company pioneering an industry;

  • Health, dental and vision coverage;

  • Unlimited vacation policy;

  • Regular events, happy hours and lunch;

  • (and of course,) Sidecar credits galore.

Employment Type: Full-Time
