Position Summary
*The Brooklyn Center Police Department is looking for experienced Police Officers*
The Brooklyn Center Police Department is seeking experienced Police Officers to serve a vibrant, diverse community in a police agency that values professional development. Join our team if you have been a police officer for at least one year and have a current POST license in good standing. Eligible officers will receive compensation based on the LELS Local 82 pay scale, reflecting their prior sworn law enforcement experience.
This position is responsible for the handling of law enforcement activity including, but not limited to, responding to calls for service, assigned tasks and details, and self-initiated contacts, works directly with citizens, assists in resolving problems/conflicts, represents the City with a courteous, helpful and professional manner. Reports to police sergeant or assigned supervisor.
Examples of Duties
General
  • Protects life and property by performing assigned law enforcement and investigative activities.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for services and assistance.
  • Enforces city ordinances and state and federal laws in fair and uniform manner and according to established department policies and effects arrests when circumstances dictate.
  • Responsible for traffic enforcement, control, and direction. This includes motorized, non-motorized and pedestrian traffic.
  • Patrols and observes the community in order to detect and deter criminal activity and provide a sense of security and well-being to the community.
  • Prepares clear and accurate reports in accordance with department policies.
  • Prepares and executes warrants, makes recommendations for criminal complaints and presents testimony as required in court.
  • Gathers, develops, and disseminates information relevant to any law enforcement problem.
  • Reports significant law enforcement information to the police sergeant or assigned supervisor.
  • Disseminates and receives information through telecommunication devices including, but not limited to, personal computer, radio system, phone system (mobile phones, voice mail), electronic mail, mobile computer devices (MCD/MDT) and digital recorders.
  • Performs other assigned and self-initiated law enforcement and service tasks, all under the general supervision of the police sergeant or assigned supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a valid Minnesota Peace Officer License or be eligible to be licensed in the State of Minnesota.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver's license or obtain within 60 days of appointment.
  • Must be eligible to carry firearm in the State of Minnesota.

Supplemental Information
Lateral Candidates: Lateral candidates will receive a $10,000 hiring incentive, paid in two installments:
  • $5,000 upon hiring
  • $5,000 after successful completion of field training

The pay range for lateral patrol officers is $40.69 - $59.01.
Effective Jan 1 2026:
Starting wage with 3 years is $8,930/month
Starting wage with 2 years is $7,680/month
Starting wage with 1 year is $7,054/month
Longevity steps:
After 5 years of service, add 2%
After 8 years of service, add 3%
After 12 years of service, add 5%
After 16 years of service, add 7%
After 20 years of service, add 9%
After 25 years of service, add 11%
Add 3% for a bachelor degree or 4% for a masters degree until longevity is reached.
Current MOU allows for double and triple time in certain circumstances.
In addition, 40 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick leave will be frontloaded upon hire. Prior law enforcement experience will count toward the specific time/experience requirements for specialty positions, promotions, and longevity pay.
Regular full-time employees are eligible for City benefits. The City offers a benefit package that includes health, dental, long and short term disability, life insurance, and deferred compensation.
