What is an MIS internship?

An MIS internship is a temporary position that provides students or recent graduates with practical experience in Management Information Systems (MIS). During the internship, participants typically work with information technology systems, help manage databases, analyze business processes, and support IT projects within an organization. The goal is to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business challenges, develop technical and analytical skills, and gain exposure to the field of MIS. Interns often collaborate with IT professionals, learn about software and hardware systems, and may contribute to improving organizational efficiency. This experience can be valuable for building a career in information systems, business analysis, or IT management.

What are MIS internship opportunities?

MIS internship opportunities are temporary positions that allow you to gain experience using management information systems (MIS) technology. During this internship, you may help process paperwork, manage a database, evaluate and prioritize requests from users, collect information, test hardware and software, ensure compliance with software licensing regulations, develop training materials, or perform other tasks as needed to help manage information systems. Some details of this internship depend on the employer. Different businesses use different MIS setups, so the nature of your responsibilities may vary. MIS internships are most common over the summer, but you may also be able to find them during other parts of the year.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MIS intern?

To thrive as an MIS Intern, you need a solid understanding of information systems, data analysis, and basic business processes, typically supported by coursework in management information systems or related fields. Familiarity with database tools (such as SQL), spreadsheet software (like Excel), and possibly ERP systems is usually expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help interns stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for supporting IT projects, interpreting data, and collaborating with technical and business teams to solve organizational challenges.

What are some typical projects or tasks that MIS interns work on during their internship?

MIS interns often assist with data management, report generation, and troubleshooting IT issues within an organization. They may help maintain databases, support end-users, analyze business processes, and participate in implementing or upgrading information systems. Interns typically work closely with both IT professionals and business teams, gaining hands-on experience with real-world systems and technologies while developing their problem-solving and communication skills.

The program includes orientation, training, manager engagement, feedback milestones, networking, and development experiences that help students explore potential full-time career paths, including EDGE where applicable.

  • Exposure to DTCC culture, values, and community engagement.

What you will do

  • Assist business and technology audit teams with documenting processes, risks, and controls through research, walkthroughs, and review of supporting documentation.
  • Support audit projects by gathering and organizing documentation, validating data, and analyzing information under the guidance of experienced auditors.
  • Assist in the use of technology and analytics tools to enhance audit coverage, improve testing efficiency, and support continuous monitoring activities.
  • Collaborate with interns and professionals across the department and organization on assigned projects and learning opportunities.

What will help you succeed

Required

  • Currently pursuing a bachelorโ€™s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Computer Science, MIS or Business & Technology Management
  • Expected graduation date: Spring 2028
  • Minimum GPA: 3.2
  • Authorization to work permanently in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Coursework, projects, prior work, internship, student organization, volunteer, or leadership experience related to the role.
  • Interest in financial services, technology, operations, risk, data, business, or the specific business area.

What makes you successful

  • Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to ask questions.
  • Strong communication, organization, and follow-through.
  • Analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Ability to use feedback and adapt as you learn.
  • Collaboration, professionalism, and accountability.
