Job description

Mill Creek Lumber & Supply Company is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our accounting team. This position plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of financial records across multiple business units. The Staff Accountant will perform month-end close activities, account reconciliations, financial reporting, sales commissions and process improvement initiatives while supporting the company's continued growth.

The ideal candidate is analytical, organized, and committed to providing exceptional internal customer service. This role offers the opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of accounting functions within a dynamic, family-owned organization that has been helping customers build their dreams since 1934.

In addition to base compensation, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus of up to 10% of base salary, based on the achievement of predetermined individual and company goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post general ledger journal entries and maintain accounts with supporting documentation.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner with an emphasis on balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory as needed.
  • Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset register - this includes recording monthly depreciation expense, tracking asset additions and disposals, posting related journal entries, and ensuring the subledger agrees to the general ledger monthly
  • Calculate and process bi-weekly commissions - this includes gathering sales data, applying commission rate schedules, and coordinating with multiple departments to ensure timely and accurate disbursement.
  • Complete and submit governmental and industry surveys - this includes gathering required financial and operational data, ensuring accuracy and consistency with internal records, and meeting all applicable filing deadlines.
  • Prepare and file monthly, quarterly and annual sales and us tax returns in multiple jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and internal controls.
  • Support annual audits and provide requested documentation to auditors.
  • Research accounting issues and recommend solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiency.
  • Collaborate with branch and department leaders to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
  • Perform other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Public accounting experience is a plus.
  • Experience in distribution, construction, manufacturing, or building materials industries is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Advanced Excel (Pivot Tables, V-Lookups, Macros)
  • Experience writing basic to intermediate SQL statements, including SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, and aggregate functions.
  • Knowledge of intercompany accounting and multi-entity accounting environments
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
