Job description

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by fostering the personal, professional, and leadership development of cadets within an upper-class company. The Company Mentor is appointed as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Vermont State Militia (VSM).

Essential Functions

  1. Develops leaders of character who live by the Norwich Guiding Values.
  2. Promotes an ethical climate through sound moral judgment and example.
  3. Coaches, counsels, and mentors cadets while enforcing university standards and policies.
  4. Uses the EAB system to identify and refer at-risk cadets to appropriate support services.
  5. Designs, updates, and implements company training plans in coordination with the Assistant Commandant.
  6. Monitors cadet performance in academics, training, fitness, and conduct.
  7. Mentors and evaluates cadet leaders at all levels.
  8. Participates in the Corps promotion and performance evaluation processes.
  9. Ensures a professional company environment that promotes discipline, academic success, and leadership development.
  10. Reports serious misconduct and assists in company-level investigations as directed.
  11. Conducts admissions presentations about Corps life and leadership opportunities.
  12. Manages barracks operations, including housing assignments, key control, inventories, and maintenance requests.
  13. Communicates with parents and families as permitted under FERPA.
  14. Serves as Student Affairs Duty Officer (SADO) on a rotating basis, including evenings and weekends.
  15. Advises or liaises with designated Corps or ROTC committees, staff sections, or specialty units.
  16. Provides Corps prospect briefs to interested cadets and their family members
  17. Wears the Vermont State Militia uniform throughout the period of employment.

Other Functions

  1. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
  2. Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  3. Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  4. Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  5. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  6. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  7. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
