What is the difference between Mid Level Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectMid Level Full Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Node.js, and databasesSpecialized in front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentCollaborates across full project stack, often in agile teams, handling both client and server-side tasksFocuses primarily on user interface, user experience, and front-end development tasks
Common UsageUsed in roles requiring full project development, integration, and deploymentUsed in roles focused on designing and implementing user-facing features

The Mid Level Full Stack Engineer has a broader scope, working on both front-end and back-end development, while a Front End Developer specializes in creating and optimizing user interfaces. Both roles require strong JavaScript skills, but the full stack engineer's expertise spans multiple technologies and layers of the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Full Stack Engineer, you need solid proficiency in front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), experience with frameworks (like React and Node.js), and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and databases (SQL/NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these areas can be advantageous. Problem-solving ability, effective communication, and strong collaboration skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure you can build scalable, reliable applications while working efficiently within cross-functional development teams.

What are Mid Level Full Stack Engineers?

Mid Level Full Stack Engineers are software developers with several years of experience who work on both the front-end and back-end of web applications. They are proficient in multiple programming languages and frameworks, and are capable of taking on tasks across the entire technology stack, from designing user interfaces to managing databases and server infrastructure. Mid level indicates they have moved beyond junior responsibilities, can work independently, and often mentor less-experienced team members. Their well-rounded skill set allows them to contribute to all phases of development and solve complex technical challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by mid-level full stack engineers when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Mid-level full stack engineers often encounter the challenge of context-switching between front-end and back-end tasks, which can require different mindsets and technical skills. Managing project priorities and ensuring seamless integration between both layers is key, especially when collaborating with specialized team members. Additionally, staying updated with evolving frameworks and best practices in both domains can be demanding, but it's essential for delivering robust, maintainable solutions. Successfully navigating these challenges often leads to increased autonomy and visibility within the team, paving the way for future advancement.

Job description

Build the full-stack platform behind biometric health technology used in real research, healthcare, workforce safety, and enterprise environments.

Junior / Mid-Level Full-Stack Platform Engineer

Location: Remote/distributed in the United States; Austin / San Antonio preferred

Company: Confidential biometric health technology company

Compensation: $90,000-$130,000 base salary, with additional flexibility for exceptional profiles

Opportunity

We are hiring a Junior / Mid-Level Full-Stack Platform Engineer for a fast-moving biometric health technology company building production systems around wearable physiological data, APIs, SDKs, and AI-forward infrastructure.

This is a hands-on builder role for someone early in their engineering career who already has real full-stack experience and strong fundamentals. You do not need to be a senior engineer. You do need to be sharp, practical, curious, and able to ship useful software with mentorship from experienced technical leaders.

The right person will help build backend services, frontend surfaces, APIs, SDKs, and data pipelines that support a broader biometric data platform. You will work in a lean startup environment where speed, ownership, clear communication, and good engineering judgment matter.

Why People Lean In
  • Real platform work in biometric health technology, not toy internal tools.
  • Direct exposure to AI-forward infrastructure, data pipelines, APIs, and SDKs.
  • Mentorship from senior technical leaders while still owning meaningful build work.
  • A lean startup environment where strong early-career engineers can grow quickly.
  • Remote/distributed setup, with Austin / San Antonio preferred but not required.
  • $90,000-$130,000 base salary for the right early-career or junior/mid-level profile, with additional flexibility for exceptional profiles.
What You Will Do
  • Build and improve full-stack platform features across frontend, backend, APIs, SDKs, and data systems.
  • Write Python- or Go-backed services and work with JavaScript or TypeScript on product-facing surfaces.
  • Support data pipelines and platform workflows that connect biometric data, enterprise systems, and AI-facing infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on architecture, implementation, deployment, and technical tradeoffs.
  • Ship clean, reliable code in a compliance-aware environment.
  • Debug production-adjacent issues, reason through data flow, and improve the platform over time.
  • Move quickly without waiting for every detail to be prescribed.
What You Bring
  • Hands-on full-stack software engineering experience from a professional role, internship, startup, open-source work, or substantial shipped project.
  • Strong Python or Go skills.
  • Experience building backend services, APIs, SDKs, or data pipelines.
  • Practical frontend experience, especially JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Solid fundamentals in Git, testing, debugging, deployment, interfaces, and data flow.
  • Comfort working in a lean startup where priorities move quickly.
  • Ability to communicate tradeoffs clearly and learn from senior engineers.
  • Willingness to complete a live coding assessment.

Recent grads can be a fit when they have unusually strong full-stack project, internship, startup, or open-source evidence. This is not a pure classroom-only role; the team needs someone who has already built and shipped real software in some form.

Nice To Have
  • Depth across both Python and Go.
  • AI/ML, AI tooling, data infrastructure, or model-facing platform exposure.
  • Health tech, wearables, biometric data, IoT, or device-connected software experience.
  • HIPAA, SOC 2, GDPR, or other compliance-aware engineering experience.
  • Austin, San Antonio, or broader Texas location.
  • Strong science, engineering, computer science, or systems-oriented background.
What Success Looks Like
  • You learn the existing platform quickly and start shipping useful work.
  • You can own well-scoped full-stack, API, SDK, backend, or data-pipeline tasks from definition through deployment.
  • You ask good questions, communicate tradeoffs, and avoid getting stuck quietly.
  • You write code that is simple, testable, and maintainable.
  • You grow quickly with mentorship while still taking real ownership.
  • You bring curiosity about AI-enabled engineering without needing to be a pure AI researcher.
Additional Details

This is a full-time role with a distributed U.S. team. Austin / San Antonio is preferred, but the engineering team is already distributed, so location is helpful rather than mandatory.

The posted salary range is $90,000-$130,000 base salary, with additional flexibility for exceptional profiles. Final compensation depends on experience, skill level, technical assessment performance, and fit for the role.

Equal Opportunity Statement
