Job Summary
Choleta is seeking a Registered Professional Forester to support development of treatment design(s) for diverse landowners and in identifying appropriate best-practices and mitigation measures to ensure that implementation is in alignment with funder stipulations and CEQA and NEPA regulations for a variety of wildfire mitigation projects
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Job Classification: Permanent; Part Time
Duty Station: Nevada County, California
Travel: up to 25%, contingent on business needs

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Develops treatment designs for hazardous fuels reduction, roadside vegetation abatement, and defensible space activities
  • Reviews assigned areas around the County as specified in individual project Scope(s) of Work to determine the appropriate treatment design based on conditions, environmental considerations, funder constraints around treatment type/cost, and landowner preference(s)
  • Recommends treatments and treatment priorities via a systematic evaluation
  • Deploys GIS tracking, including documentation of location, species, and proximity to infrastructure (residential structures, roads, utility lines etc.); program used shall be compatible with ArcGIS
  • Uses GIS mapping to produce visual exhibits identifying hazardous vegetation type and priority
  • Assists the County with property owner coordination
  • Contacts, procures and documents access to properties
  • Assists with determining property owner's decision on treatment design and biomass disposal preference within the constraints of the funding source and the environmental clearance requirements (CEQA/NEPA etc.)
  • Coordinates with involved government agencies and funding agencies as requested and needed
  • Attends public meetings as necessary
  • Provides support material to agencies for community outreach
  • Compiles treatment design information to inform the scope of work for implementation of hazardous fuels reduction, roadside vegetation abatement, and defensible space treatments as applicable
  • Prepares documentation that will clearly define scope of work for bidding purposes, including tree/vegetation location (GIS coordinates), species, size, proximity to infrastructure of concern and level of effort required for removal
  • Prepares project specifications
  • Prepares a summary sheet of proposed hazardous vegetation removal by parcel
  • Flags sensitive species and areas for avoidance or mitigation measures prior to implementation and monitor to ensure compliance
  • Provides reports, specifications, and plans in the required format indicated by the County and applicable regulatory and/or funding entities, including but not limited to geospatial data and written documentation.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Familiarity with wildfire mitigation actions: best-practices, terminology, impact assessment methodology and best-available science as this pertains to activities including hazardous fuels reduction, roadside vegetation abatement, and defensible space; and knowledge of the County of Nevada, its environment, and the relevant concerns of the communities and regulatory agencies (consultants may assist in community presentations)
  • Demonstrated expertise in forest and fuels treatment design for wildfire mitigation projects, including hazardous fuels reduction, roadside vegetation management, and defensible space activities
  • Experience developing treatment designs for diverse landowners, including public agencies, private landowners, and community organizations
  • Strong knowledge of best management practices (BMPs) and mitigation measures to ensure project compliance with funding requirements and regulatory standards
  • Working knowledge of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations as they relate to wildfire mitigation and forest management projects
  • Experience collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical documentation and coordination with project partners

Education and Experience
Required: Bachelor's degree Forestry, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a closely related field
Required: At least Three (3) years of professional experience in forest management, fuels reduction planning, or wildfire mitigation project design.
Required: Current Registered Professional Forester (RPF) license in the State of California
Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
