Job Title: Microbiologist II – Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

Duration: Contract through December 31, 2026

Interview Process: Phone Screening followed by In-Person Interview.

About the Role

The Client is seeking a highly motivated Microbiologist II to join its Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Laboratory Network. This position is responsible for performing advanced microbiological and molecular testing procedures to identify and characterize antimicrobial-resistant pathogens that impact public health.

The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in microbiology, molecular biology, bacterial culture techniques, quality assurance practices, and CLIA-regulated laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological examinations and analyses including culture, biochemical testing, PCR, sequencing, MALDI-TOF, and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
  • Isolate, identify, and characterize bacterial and fungal pathogens, including:
  • Escherichia coli (E. coli)
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Acinetobacter baumannii
  • Candida auris
  • Conduct nucleic acid extraction using manual and automated methods.
  • Evaluate, interpret, validate, and report laboratory findings.
  • Maintain strict adherence to CLIA regulations, quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory safety standards.
  • Perform specimen processing, test analyses, documentation, and record maintenance.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and maintain competency in assigned testing areas.
  • Assist in preparing epidemiological, statistical, and surveillance reports.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, equipment calibration, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Support cross-training initiatives in molecular, microbiological, viral, serological, and related laboratory disciplines.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of microbiology principles, theories, and laboratory practices.
  • Experience with bacterial culture, isolation, identification, and antimicrobial resistance testing.
  • Strong understanding of molecular biology techniques and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to maintain aseptic techniques in microbiology and molecular biology laboratories.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and biosafety requirements.
  • Familiarity with CLIA regulations and quality management systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of high-complexity clinical or public health laboratory experience.
  • Experience providing oversight of high-complexity laboratory testing activities.
  • Hands-on experience with PCR, sequencing technologies, MALDI-TOF, and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
  • Experience working in a CLIA-regulated environment.
