Position Summary
Department Information:
The Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington, consists of a well-rounded research community with cutting-edge expertise in a wide variety of modern disciplines including analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical biology and biochemistry.
The chemical biology area of the Department of Chemistry is located in Simon Hall, home to our graduate training program in Quantitative and Chemical Biology and nearby other biochemists and structural biologists and all structural biology and analytical chemistry core facilities. Physical proximity to microbiologists in the Department of Biology (across the courtyard) and weekly participation in the Microphiles trainee-led seminar series held in Simon Hall promotes strong interactions with these groups as well.
Job Summary:
Prof. Giedroc seeks a postdoctoral research associate as a member of multidisciplinary team of students and Ph.D.-level staff tasked with obtaining a molecular understanding bacterial sulfur metabolism and mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide (H2S)/reactive sulfur species (RSS) homeostasis in strict anaerobes.
We seek to appoint a postdoctoral trainee to conduct microbiological, biochemical and structural studies of proteins involved in bacterial sulfur metabolism and hydrogen sulfide (H2S)/reactive sulfur species (RSS) homeostasis. This project benefits strongly from long-standing pathogenesis collaborators at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The position is supported by an existing NIH grant to Prof. Giedroc, and support is provided for up to three years pending satisfactory research progress by the successful candidate.
Basic Qualifications
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to take a leadership position in the laboratory, driving a project forward, working largely independently, alongside professional staff collaborators on the Bloomington campus as needed. This individual will be responsible for all aspects of their project, from project design in collaboration with Prof. Giedroc, to execution of experiments, and analysis of all data acquired. The successful candidate will help to co-author manuscripts for publication. This individual will have an opportunity to attend one scientific conference annually to present the results of their project, and to build a professional network in the US.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, chemical biology or a related discipline, with no postdoctoral experience necessary at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have experience in all modern microbiological methods, and a strong interest in learning recombinant protein purification and associated biochemical methods, and/or core techniques of bioanalytical chemistry (mass spectrometry) routinely used in the laboratory. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills and a strong outcomes orientation.
$57,500/year, Postdoctoral Fellow
The initial appointment for this position will be for 12 months. Additional 12-month extensions will be available based on performance. A competitive benefits package will also be offered.
