Job description

What You'll Do:

The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Microbiology Supervisor 2 to manage and direct multiple sections within the microbiology subdivision. The Microbiology Supervisor 2 will collaborate with the Bureau Chief, Assistant Chief, and CLIA Laboratory Director in quality and safety planning, strategic planning, program conceptualization, and future testing direction to drive the public health laboratory forward. This position is a critical addition to the laboratory's leadership structure, aimed at strengthening operational oversight, ensuring highquality test performance, and supporting the advancement of public health laboratory services. Duties include:

  • Oversee three Microbiology Supervisor 1's (enterics, antimicrobial resistance, tuberculosis, virology, serology, parasitology, rabies, arbovirus, radiochemistry, wastewater).
  • Support development and administration of microbiological programs (e.g., testing, interpretation and reporting of clinical and public health laboratory results).
  • Act in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Technical Supervisor capacity.
  • Serve as liaison with epidemiological teams and advances program development activities that strengthen laboratory services and public health response capabilities.
  • Serve as lead investigator when issues are identified through audits, quality review activities, complaints, incidents, or laboratory findings.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners regarding laboratory services, testing priorities, result interpretation, and public health response needs.
  • Prepare reports, summaries, audit documentation, grant materials, milestone updates, and other written communications related to microbiology operations and program activities.
  • Assist in development and implementation of laboratory policies, procedures, and operational expectations across microbiology sections.
  • Recommend improvements in staffing, workflow, quality systems, automation, and technical practices to strengthen laboratory operations and public health laboratory services.
  • Assist with laboratory drills, exercises and readiness activities to support regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, operational continuity, and quality improvement.
     

Unusual Working Conditions:

Selected candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives; may work varying hours and must be able to provide own transportation.

VACCINATED: Proof of Hepatitis-B vaccination due before first day of work (do NOT provide, until directed to do so)
NOT VACCINATED: Qualified candidates NOT yet fully vaccinated for Hepatitis-B must be able & willing to receive the vaccination.  We can provide it at no cost (post-hire) and temporarily limit your work duties to prevent exposure.  

Completion of undergraduate core program in microbiology AND  24 mos. exp. as microbiologist AND  6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques. 
-OR  completion of graduate core program in microbiology AND  12 mos. exp. as microbiologist AND  6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques. 
-OR 6 mos. exp. as Microbiology Supervisor 1, 83216. Positions responsible for supervising testing of body fluids &/or tissues must also qualify under Federal Regulations, Title 20, Chapter III, Part 405 (Conditions for Coverage of Services of Independent Laboratories). 
-OR equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
