Time: 8-hour shifts – 6:00am to 2:30pm 

Location: St Joseph Medical Center – Kansas City, MO

We are seeking a Microbiology Specialist II, also referred to as a Senior Microbiology Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist – Microbiology. The Microbiology Specialist II requires advanced technical expertise in microbiological testing, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team. This role plays a key part in identifying infectious organisms, troubleshooting complex cases, and supporting accurate diagnoses that directly impact patient treatment and infection prevention efforts.


  • Perform and oversee microbiological testing on patient specimens including blood, urine, respiratory samples, wound cultures, and other bodily fluids to detect and identify microorganisms
  • Utilize advanced microbiological techniques to culture, isolate, and identify bacteria, fungi, parasites, and other pathogens, and assist with complex or unusual organism identification
  • Analyze, verify, and report test results including antimicrobial susceptibility findings, ensuring accuracy, timely reporting, and appropriate follow-up on critical values
  • Support quality assurance initiatives by monitoring quality control data, troubleshooting instrumentation or methodology issues, and assisting with validation of new procedures or equipment
  • Ensure accurate documentation in the laboratory information system and maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, safety practices, and accreditation requirements

Education and Work Experience

  • Possession of a current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or limited state ClinicalLaboratory Scientist license as a Microbiologist Specialist if the laboratory is located in a state where required
  • Minimum 5 years of microbiology experience, including public health issue and reporting requirements
  • Previous supervisory/management experience required
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489)
