Job description

Student Insurance Advocate

The Student Insurance Advocate oversees and provides administrative leadership for the student health insurance plan (SHIP) offered to Miami University students through United Health Care Student Resources (UHCSR). This position is responsible for the operations related to the Miami University SHIP and will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team committed to the holistic well-being of all Miami students. The Advocate serves as the key contact, liaison, factfinder, problem-solver, and advocate for students insured by UHCSR should issues or needs arise pertaining to the SHIP.

The Advocate also coordinates ongoing communication efforts between university administration, UHCSR, students, and other key constituents (i.e., parents).

The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated, strategic, and socially skilled catalyst for creating a healthier and more informed student body by leading awareness-building initiatives regarding health insurance and providing personalized support to students seeking direction regarding Miami's SHIP.

This position is on-site full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime.

We offer on-the-job training. The hours during training will be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Primary Responsibilities:

Program Administration

  • Collaborates with key university departments (Registrar, Bursar, IT Services, University Communications and Marketing, Health Services. Student Life, etc.) to ensure processes pertaining to the SHIP are as smooth and seamless as possible throughout the insurance plan year.
  • Regularly assesses and facilitates the implementation of the annual online student enrollment and waiver process.
  • Maintains the UHCSR Waiver Administration Tool, which tracks students' annual enrollment and waivers into/out of the Miami SHIP.
  • Demonstrate expertise in all phases of claims processing, including enrollment management, the appeal process, the predetermination process, and contract interpretation of plan benefits and policy provisions.
  • Maintain accurate records of students enrolled in the SHIP, including their coverage details and relevant documentation, while ensuring confidentiality and security of sensitive health information.

Communication and Education

  • Interface regularly, proactively, and effectively with all Miami University constituents (undergraduate and graduate students, domestic and international students, Oxford and Regional students, parents, university administrators, and key campus partners) while clearly presenting the UHCSR Insurance plan benefits.
  • Develop and offer meaningful educational programs to students regarding health insurance, including the current plan design, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate and attend on-campus service-related functions as it relates to the SHIP, including meetings/committees, New Student Orientations, Health Fairs, and In-Service Information Sessions, etc.
  • Develop and distribute effective and ongoing communications to SHIP members and key constituents (i.e., dependents, parents, etc.)

Customer Service

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a responsive, friendly, and solution-oriented nature when interacting with all constituents pertaining to the SHIP.
  • Assist in the resolution of any issues pertaining to billing, claims, etc.
  • Oversee the enrollment/waiver process, including anticipating needs and potential obstacles to the process and researching eligibility issues.

Strategic Planning

  • Proactively create and offer ideas, programs, and collaborative initiatives to enhance students' education and understanding of the SHIP.
  • Offer innovative ideas and solutions to enhance existing approaches to SHIP to improve the experience of all SHIP users.
  • Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to enhance productivity and innovation by streamlining workflows and automating repetitive tasks. Evaluate emerging trends to drive continuous improvement and strategic innovation.
  • Other duties as assigned by UHCSR or Miami University to support the SHIP.
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma / GED OR equivalent work experience
  • Must be 18 years of age OR older
  • 3+ years of experience administering health insurance programs, employee/student benefits, healthcare operations, higher education administration, or a related field
  • Experience with coordinating projects, timelines, and stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes
  • Experience conducting presentations, workshops, and educational sessions for diverse audiences
  • Knowledge of health insurance plan design, enrollment processes, claims administration, appeals, eligibility verification, or benefits interpretation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Must reside within 25 miles to the office location at 421 S. Campus Ave, Oxford, OH 45056

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lean / Six Sigma certified
  • Experience working with Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP) or health insurance programs in a university setting

  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, delivering clear, concise, engaging, and energetic presentations to audiences of varying sizes.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor, with adherence to business casual and business professional dress standards as appropriate.

  • Exceptional attention to detail combined with strong written and verbal communication skills in both individual and group settings.
  • Success working in an educational environment that values excellence, integrity, and efficiency, while maintaining a positive attitude, adaptability, and enthusiasm for supporting students and stakeholders.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $60,200 to $107,400 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
