To thrive as a Meteorology Consultant, you need a solid background in atmospheric science, data analysis, and typically a degree in meteorology or a related field. Familiarity with weather modeling software, GIS systems, and often certification from organizations like the American Meteorological Society are commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and client management skills help you effectively interpret complex data and tailor insights for diverse industries. What is meteorology consulting?

Meteorology consulting is a professional service where experts in weather and climate provide specialized advice and analysis to organizations or individuals. These consultants help clients make informed decisions by interpreting meteorological data, forecasting weather conditions, and assessing environmental impacts. Their services are valuable in industries such as agriculture, construction, energy, insurance, and transportation, where weather plays a significant role in operations and risk management. Meteorology consultants may also assist in legal cases, event planning, and policy development related to climate and weather.

How does a meteorology consultant typically collaborate with clients from different industries?

Meteorology consultants often work closely with clients in sectors like agriculture, energy, transportation, and construction to provide tailored weather insights and risk assessments. Collaboration involves regular meetings to understand industry-specific challenges, interpreting complex meteorological data for non-experts, and delivering actionable forecasts or reports. Effective consultants also coordinate with client teams, such as project managers and safety officers, to recommend strategies for weather-related risk mitigation. Building strong client relationships and maintaining clear communication is essential for ensuring that meteorological guidance fits the client's operational needs.

Job description

Description and Requirements
Job Description
Role Overview
We are seeking a technically skilled and operationally experienced meteorologist with a focus on fire weather forecasting to join a utility's meteorology team. This full-time, in-person role is critical to enhancing situational awareness, supporting emergency response, and improving fire weather intelligence through real-time forecasting, data analysis, and tool development. This is a contract position with an opportunity to apply for the permanent role.
What You'll Do
Fire weather forecasting and reporting (60%)
  • Monitor and analyze real-time weather conditions and provide timely updates during Red Flag Warnings and storm events.
  • Prepare and disseminate daily operational weather forecasts and fire weather outlooks, in addition to weekly weather outlooks during the summer season.
  • Prepare and disseminate non-routine weather reports and hazard forecasts for high-impact events such as Santa Ana winds, heat waves, and winter storms.
  • Develop short- and long-term seasonal forecasts using atmospheric models and various data sources to support proactive planning; information relating to temperature predictions, precipitation likelihood and potential long range atmospheric conditions would be required.
  • Support Department Emergency Operations Center activations with shift-based overtime or on-call work, including nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours.

Product oversight (30%)
  • Oversee the utility's fire weather products, including the Fire Potential Index and Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index, ensuring quality control and product integrity.
  • Keep utility meteorology related websites up-to-date with real-time and forecast information, coordinating with operations and vendors for maintenance and updates as needed.

Inter-team coordination (10%)
  • Serve as a liaison between the meteorology team and fire coordination units.
  • Conduct field studies to support major projects.
  • This position's work mode is in-person.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science, Fire Science, Environmental Science, or a related field (Master's degree or meteorological certification preferred).
  • 2-4 years of experience in meteorological operations with working knowledge of meteorological processes, climatology, forecasting techniques, and weather model analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical data into actionable insights.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across departments and with external agencies.
  • Ability to review, analyze and recommend improvement to systems, processes and measures of performance
  • Proficiency in data management skills to efficiently complete studies and visually demonstrate findings that utilize data from disparate sources
