Job description

DESCRIPTION: (Including but not limited to)

The Materials & Welding Engineer is responsible for specification of materials & heat treatments, laboratory analysis, root cause analysis, design, development & qualification of welding processes and qualification of welders. The materials applications are primarily nickel & cobalt superalloys as well as stainless, alloy and carbon steels.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Specify materials and heat treatments for repair and for new product manufacture.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis for material identification, coatings condition, degradation and failure reporting.
  • Review & advise on technical & customer-specific requirements.
  • Participate in technical discussions with customers, engineers & leadership.
  • Write & review material specification documents.
  • Specify weld materials, parameters and heat treatments for GMAW, GTAW, Submerged Arc, Electron Beam and Laser welding.
  • Write WPS, PQR and other process control procedures and specifications.
  • Qualification of welders.
  • Specify and source welding and laboratory equipment.
  • Provide approval dispositions for thermal coating production samples.

WORK QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Knowledge of nickel & cobalt superalloy metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of nickel superalloy welding & brazing processes.
  • Knowledge of stainless, carbon & alloy steel welding and heat treatment.
  • Experience with nickel forgings and castings, including directionally solidified and single crystal.
  • Experience with protective coatings for gas turbine components.

Preferred:

  • 5 years in Gas Turbine industry.
  • Knowledge of protective coatings for gas turbine components.
  • Experience with cast, forged & fabricated gas turbine components and rotors.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • The candidate must hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering from an accredited university.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the role.
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time or until the end of the assigned shift.

  • Must be able to bend/stoop, squat, reach above shoulder height, crouch, balance, and push/pull.
