Job Summary: 

Corporate level position supporting NRGโ€™s fleet of pumps and select auxiliary equipment across the country.  Pump Engineer/Specialist will provide on-site support for field inspections, condition assessments and run, repair, replace recommendations. Coordinate repair activities with various repair shops and suppliers.  Assist in developing and/or reviewing quality plans in addition to monitoring and auditing supplier quality. Emphasis on communication amongst peers, site management, and leadership team.  Review of equipment histories, applicable manufacturers bulletins, and operational history and requirements to develop long range plans for pumps and select auxiliary equipment.  Support our culture for safety, environmental compliance, and quality.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supports and emphasizes the importance of safety and environmental programs
  • Evaluates component condition and repair options and performs risk assessment for maintenance activities
  • Participates and/or leads teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units
  • Communicates with customers regarding condition of equipment and repair work scope
  • Inspects completed work or work in progress to assure job quality
  • Performs field inspections and takes field measurements
  • Coordinates activities with Vendors/Contractors, other divisions and departments
  • Recognizes problems and is proactive in helping to resolve them
  • Performs root cause analysis of system and equipment problems
  • Develops quality work plans when required
  • Performs engineering calculations in area of responsibility
  • Assists in outage planning and economic evaluation of pump projects as needed
  • May be required to manage projects in area of expertise
  • Ensures company resources are used in a cost-effective manner
  • Prepares written reports in assigned area of responsibility
  • Performs technical duties in area of responsibility
  • Develops and maintains technical specifications for purchase of replacement parts, vendor repairs and maintenance standards
  • Identifies and implements new or existing repair technology in area of responsibility
  • Qualifies vendors and suppliers for parts and services in area of responsibility

 

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment and/or outside work environment (including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating plants)
  • Requires travel to and from NRG plants or vendor facilities across the country (approx. 25% of the time)
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle and a valid drivers license
  • Requires personal protective safety equipment while in the plants
  • Overtime or non-standard hours may be required
  • Requires operating a personal computer

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of Baccalaureate Degree in appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 5 years of experience in pump maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting.
  • All positions at NRG will require at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Fundamental knowledge of vibration analysis and balancing of rotating equipment
  • Fundamental knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of pumps and components
  • Knowledge of pump repair specifications (API)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge of machining principles and general welding processes
  • Proficient in the use and application of basic mathematics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Engineering degree and minimum 15 years of experience in pump engineering, maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience in maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting of pumps
  • Training and experience in vibration analysis and balancing of rotating equipment
  • Knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of pumps and components
  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring equipment including but not limited to micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment equipment etc

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills with craft personnel, site leadership, as well as management.
  • Ability to take a leadership role in meetings and communications around pump issues.
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of power plant systems
  • Knowledge of pump repair processes
  • Ability to prepare written reports and presentations to management

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment access, inspect or collect data on plant equipment.
