How much do metallurgist jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for metallurgist in the United States is $90,692.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $102,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a metallurgist?

An engineer who studies and alters metals is called a metallurgist. As a metallurgist, you are trained to understand the properties of materials like steel and aluminum to change and shape them. You work on projects in different industries, like creating commercial products (like golf clubs or electrical products) or on projects in aerospace engineering. Many metallurgists specialize, for example, earning qualifications to become a chemical, process or physical metallurgist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metallurgist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metallurgist, you need a solid background in materials science, chemistry, and metallurgy, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with laboratory analysis tools, metallurgical testing equipment, and modeling software like Thermo-Calc or MATLAB is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating and interpreting complex data. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure the development, testing, and improvement of metal products and processes in industrial settings.

What are some common challenges metallurgists face when working with new alloys or materials?

Metallurgists often encounter challenges such as unpredictable material properties, scaling laboratory results to industrial production, and ensuring compliance with industry standards when working with new alloys. Troubleshooting issues like brittleness, corrosion resistance, or weldability can require extensive testing and collaboration with engineers and quality assurance teams. Staying updated with the latest analytical techniques and regulatory changes is also essential for addressing these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Metallurgist vs Materials Scientist?

AspectMetallurgistMaterials Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related fields; certifications varyBachelor's or higher in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related fields; often advanced degrees
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, labs, mining sites, steel millsResearch labs, universities, industrial R&D facilities
Industry UsageHeavy industry, manufacturing, mining, metal productionResearch, development, academia, high-tech industries

Metallurgists focus on the processing, testing, and production of metals, working mainly in manufacturing and industrial settings. Materials Scientists explore the properties and applications of various materials, including metals, polymers, and ceramics, often in research environments. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, metallurgists are more industry-oriented, whereas materials scientists tend to work in research and development.

How much do metallurgists get paid?

Metallurgists typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals or those in specialized fields can earn higher salaries, especially with certifications and advanced skills in materials analysis and process optimization.

Is metallurgy a good career choice?

Metallurgists analyze and develop metals and alloys, working in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and energy. The field offers opportunities for specialization, requires technical skills, and often involves working in laboratories or industrial environments, with a demand for continuous learning and certifications.

Is metallurgy high paying?

Metallurgists typically earn competitive salaries, especially with experience and advanced skills in areas like materials analysis and process optimization. Salaries can vary based on industry, location, and level of education, but metallurgy is generally considered a well-paying engineering field.

What is the work of a metallurgist?

A metallurgist studies and analyzes metals and alloys to understand their properties, structure, and performance. They develop processes for extracting, refining, and improving metals, often working in laboratories or manufacturing environments, and use tools like microscopes and spectrometers. Their work supports industries such as aerospace, automotive, and construction by ensuring material quality and safety.
