Mercy Circle is a vibrant continuing care retirement community sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, located on Chicago’s southwest side. We provide a full continuum of care—independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing—to adults 62 years  and older in a mission-driven, person-centered environment.


We are seeking a strategic, relationship-driven leader to join our leadership team as the Human Resources Director. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible leadership role responsible for overseeing all human resources functions while partnering closely with executive leadership to support a thriving, mission-aligned workplace.


What You’ll Do

As the Human Resources Director, you will combine strategic leadership with hands-on execution to support employees, strengthen culture, and ensure organizational excellence.


Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead the development and execution of HR strategies aligned with Mercy Circle’s mission and organizational goals
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on workforce planning, employee engagement, and organizational effectiveness
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven culture across all departments
  • Partner with leadership to support change management and organizational growth initiatives


Talent Acquisition & Retention

  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes to attract and retain top talent
  • Develop and implement retention and engagement strategies to support workforce stability
  • Ensure a welcoming and supportive onboarding experience for new employees
  • Monitor staffing trends and proactively address workforce needs


Employee Relations & Development

  • Provide guidance and coaching to managers on employee relations, performance management, and conflict resolution
  • Support leadership in conducting performance evaluations and development planning
  • Promote employee engagement through training, recognition, and development programs
  • Maintain a strong visible presence with staff to build trust and communication


Compliance, Policies & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
  • Develop, implement, and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook
  • Oversee investigations related to employee concerns, ensuring fair and consistent resolution
  • Support workplace safety and risk management initiatives


Compensation, Benefits & HR Operations

  • Oversee compensation and benefits administration in collaboration with finance and external partners
  • Develop and update job descriptions
  • Ensure accurate HR and payroll systems, records, and reporting
  • Analyze HR data and metrics to inform decision-making and continuous improvement
  • Manage payroll coordination and HR operational processes


Collaboration & Support

  • Collaborate with department leaders to support staffing, engagement, and performance goals
  • Participate in leadership initiatives to improve employee satisfaction, retention, quality assurance/performance improvement and overall organizational effectiveness
  • Participate in the Manager on Duty (MOD) rotation, providing leadership support across the community as needed
  • Maintain flexibility to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours to ensure visibility and engagement with staff across all shifts


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership responsibility
  • Experience in healthcare, specifically in a skilled nursing setting
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR certification (preferred)
  • Proficiency in HR systems and Microsoft Office applications
