What is an MEP Project Manager?

MEP Project Managers are professionals who oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems in construction projects. They are responsible for managing teams, budgets, schedules, and ensuring that all MEP systems are installed and functioning according to project specifications and codes. Their role bridges the gap between design, engineering, and construction, ensuring seamless integration of these critical systems. MEP Project Managers work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to deliver successful building projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP Project Manager?

To thrive as an MEP Project Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, typically with a degree in engineering or construction management. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Primavera, as well as CAD and BIM tools, and certifications such as PMP or LEED, are highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills set top candidates apart in coordinating diverse teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure that complex building projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to specification.

What are some common challenges MEP Project Managers face when coordinating multidisciplinary teams on complex construction projects?

MEP Project Managers often encounter challenges in aligning mechanical, electrical, and plumbing teams to meet overlapping project milestones. Effective coordination requires clear communication, conflict resolution skills, and a strong understanding of each discipline's timelines and dependencies. Additionally, managing changes in design, addressing site constraints, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards can add complexity to the role. Proactive planning and regular cross-discipline meetings are key strategies for overcoming these hurdles and delivering successful project outcomes.

Job description

Pay: $110,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year

Why This Is a Great Opportunity

  • Lead sophisticated MEP projects for high-rise, residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings across South Florida.
  • Combine hands-on HVAC design expertise with true project leadership, managing work from concept and design through construction support.
  • Manage and mentor an MEP design team while working directly with clients, architects, contractors, and internal engineering professionals.
  • Take ownership of design quality, schedules, coordination, project documentation, and important technical decisions.
  • Work extensively with Revit while applying your mechanical and HVAC expertise to complex building systems.
  • Build toward a potential Associate-level leadership opportunity as you grow with our team.
  • Receive 15 days of PTO, five additional days during Christmas break, a 401(k) with up to a 3% company match, and access to discounted vision, dental, and life insurance plans.

Location

This is a full-time, in-office opportunity in South Miami, Florida. Our Project Manager works closely with staff and clients every day, so regular on-site presence is required. We do have remote capabilities available when occasional needs arise, but this is not a hybrid or remote position. Local South Florida candidates are strongly preferred.

Note

Candidates must have 7+ years of HVAC systems design experience, high-rise building experience, an EIT/FE credential at minimum, Revit experience, and experience managing an MEP design team. Strong professional communication skills in English and Spanish are also required. PE licensure is strongly preferred, or candidates should have a clearly established path toward obtaining their PE.

About Us

We are an established South Florida consulting engineering firm specializing in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection design for sophisticated building projects. Our team is known for detailed engineering, collaborative project delivery, and the opportunity for experienced engineers to take meaningful ownership of their work and client relationships. Confidential Employer.

Job Description

  • Lead MEP projects from initial planning and design through construction administration and project completion.
  • Design, review, and coordinate HVAC and mechanical building systems for complex high rise projects.
  • Manage and guide an MEP design team while coordinating responsibilities, schedules, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Review Revit drawings and coordinated MEP plans for technical accuracy, constructability, and design quality.
  • Communicate directly with clients, architects, contractors, consultants, and internal engineering staff.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, documentation, design reviews, and resource planning.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and other construction administration documentation.
  • Resolve design and field issues while keeping projects moving efficiently.
  • Support value engineering efforts and ensure designs comply with applicable building codes and engineering standards.
  • Mentor developing engineers and contribute to the continued growth of our engineering team.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of directly relevant HVAC systems design experience.
  • EIT certification or documented FE exam passage required.
  • PE license strongly preferred, or a demonstrated path toward PE licensure.
  • High rise building design experience required.
  • Revit experience required.
  • Experience managing an MEP design team required.
  • Strong project management, coordination, scheduling, and client communication skills.
  • Professional communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • AutoCAD experience is beneficial.
  • Experience with submittals, RFIs, construction administration, building codes, and permitting is preferred.
  • Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical education and professional background.

Why You Will Love Working Here

  • You will have a visible leadership role rather than being limited to one piece of the design process.
  • You will work on technically challenging building projects where your decisions have a meaningful impact.
  • You will collaborate closely with experienced engineers, clients, architects, and construction professionals.
  • Strong performers can build toward an Associate level leadership opportunity.
  • Our benefits include 15 days of PTO, five additional days during Christmas break, a 401(k) with up to a 3% match, and discounted vision, dental, and life insurance plans.
