What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MEP Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, often supported by a degree in engineering and relevant certifications like LEED or PMP. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM software is typically required for design and project coordination. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help MEP Engineers manage project challenges and collaborate across disciplines. These competencies are crucial for delivering efficient, compliant, and high-quality building systems on schedule and within budget.

What are some typical challenges MEP Engineers face when coordinating with other construction teams on a project?

MEP Engineers often work closely with architects, structural engineers, and contractors to ensure that mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are seamlessly integrated into a building's design. A common challenge is managing clashes between MEP systems and structural elements, which requires strong communication and problem-solving skills to resolve. Additionally, staying on schedule while accommodating last-minute design changes or site constraints can be demanding. Successful MEP Engineers are proactive in coordination meetings and utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools to anticipate and address potential conflicts early in the project.

Job Summary:
The MEP Estimator is responsible for managing assigned construction estimating projects, with a focus on Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing trades, to ensure a complete scope of work is documented and analyzed in a timely manner for cost and feasibility analysis. Responsibilities include organizing bid solicitations, conducting quantitative analysis, reviewing schedules, costing, risk, and interpreting project specifications and contract language, while working independently with considerable decision-making latitude. The role involves close collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders including architects, engineers, owners, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Location: This position will be at the Hagerman Fishers office. This is not a remote position.
MEP Estimator Key Responsibilities:
  • Reviews and analyzes project plans, specifications, and documents to understand the scope of work and requirements for MEP systems; conducts material take-offs and quantifies necessary materials and resources based on drawings and specifications.
  • Analyzes labor, equipment, subcontractor costs, and overhead related to MEP installations; prepares detailed cost estimates using estimating software and creates organized project estimating files for reference.
  • Collaborates with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, architects, owners, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure estimates align with project requirements and schedules; prepares and presents cost estimates, proposals, and bid documents.
  • Participates in pre-bid meetings, site visits, negotiations, and bid strategy sessions to clarify requirements, resolve discrepancies, and assign scopes to trade contractors; reviews scopes of work with subcontractors and suppliers pre- and post-bid.
  • Monitors and updates estimates throughout the project lifecycle, tracking changes, revising as needed, and providing cost analysis reports to project teams; attends turnover and close-out meetings to gather historical data and evaluate vendor performance.
  • Assesses constructability and logistics with internal and external teams; builds schedules based on project durations and sequences to support efficient and profitable bid strategies.
  • Organizes and manages bid day activities, including coordinating bid runners, reviewing bid forms, setting up software, and managing communication with the bid team.
  • Identifies project-specific permit fees, bonding and insurance requirements, temporary facilities, and overhead costs; creates bid advertisements and supports publishing of XBE requirements when needed.
  • Prepares job costing reports for tracking actual vs. budgeted quantities and labor; compiles scope documentation to support purchase order and subcontract development.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to support successful and competitive bidding efforts.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 + years of work experience in large-scale vertical commercial construction estimating. BA/BS/AS or other accredited degree may substitute for up to 4 years of experience.
