What types of situations does someone in a Mental Health First Aid role typically respond to?

Mental Health First Aid practitioners often act as the first point of contact in situations where someone is experiencing signs of mental distress, such as anxiety attacks, severe stress reactions, or substance use crises. They assess the circumstance, offer non-judgmental support, and connect individuals to appropriate professional resources or emergency services if necessary. While they do not diagnose or treat mental illnesses, their early intervention can make a significant difference in de-escalating situations and encouraging individuals to seek ongoing help. Team collaboration with counselors, supervisors, or school staff is common to ensure a coordinated response and follow-up care.
