How much do mems engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of May 28, 2026, the average hourly pay for mems engineering in the United States is $29.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.67 and $32.45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MEMS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a MEMS Engineer, you need a solid background in microfabrication, semiconductor physics, and materials science, typically with a degree in electrical, mechanical, or materials engineering. Familiarity with CAD design tools, cleanroom processes, and simulation software like COMSOL or CoventorWare is often required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies ensure the precise design, fabrication, and integration of MEMS devices for high-performance and innovative applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by MEMS engineers when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

MEMS engineers often encounter challenges such as scaling up fabrication processes, ensuring device reliability, and maintaining yield consistency during the transition from prototype to mass production. Small changes in design or materials can significantly impact performance at scale, so close collaboration with manufacturing teams and iterative testing are crucial. Additionally, MEMS engineers must consider packaging, testing, and integration with electronics, which can add complexity to the production process.

What is MEMS engineering?

MEMS engineering involves the design, fabrication, and testing of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), which are tiny devices that combine electrical and mechanical components at a microscale. MEMS are used in a variety of applications, including sensors, actuators, and microfluidic devices, commonly found in smartphones, automotive systems, medical devices, and more. MEMS engineers work on the development of these devices, utilizing specialized fabrication techniques and materials to create innovative solutions for a wide range of industries.

What is the difference between Mems Engineering vs Microfabrication Engineering?

AspectMems EngineeringMicrofabrication Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering; often includes specialized MEMS coursesBachelor's or higher in Chemical, Materials, or Mechanical Engineering; includes microfabrication process knowledge
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departmentsCleanrooms, fabrication facilities, R&D labs
Industry UsageDesign and develop MEMS devices like sensors and actuatorsDevelop microfabrication processes for various micro-scale devices

While both roles involve micro-scale technologies, Mems Engineering focuses on designing MEMS devices, whereas Microfabrication Engineering emphasizes developing fabrication processes. MEMS engineers often work on device integration, while microfabrication engineers optimize manufacturing techniques. Both roles are essential in industries like electronics, healthcare, and automotive, but they differ in their core focus and skill sets.
