A Day in the Life

In this highly collaborative and strategic role, you will serve as the primary interface between Research & Technology (R&T), Global Supply Management (GSM), Engineering, Operations, and external suppliers. You will identify and develop innovative supplier partnerships, lead early supplier engagement activities, and influence sourcing strategies during the earliest stages of technology and product development.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serve as the sourcing engineering lead for Research & Technology (R&T) and early-stage product development initiatives.
  • Partner with R&T, Engineering, Operations, and Global Supply Management teams to develop sourcing strategies that support future technology roadmaps and innovation objectives.
  • Lead Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) activities by identifying, evaluating, and engaging suppliers early in the technology development lifecycle.
  • Scout emerging technologies, manufacturing capabilities, and supplier innovations that can enable future products and competitive advantages.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with suppliers to support long-term technology development initiatives.
  • Evaluate supplier technical capabilities, manufacturing processes, scalability, and commercial readiness to ensure alignment with Medtronic's innovation needs.
  • Serve as the technical liaison between Medtronic engineering teams and suppliers, translating design requirements into supplier technical solutions.
  • Identify technical and business risks associated with new technologies, supplier capabilities, and sourcing strategies while developing effective mitigation plans.
  • Support technology and supplier assessments that influence future product and technology roadmaps.
  • Collaborate across global, cross-functional teams to balance technical requirements, quality, cost, manufacturability, and supply continuity.
  • Facilitate supplier innovation workshops, technical reviews, and collaborative development activities.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and supplier capabilities to proactively identify new opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership to Global Supply Management during supplier selection, technology evaluation, and strategic sourcing decisions.
  • Develop reports, recommendations, and executive-level updates on supplier technology scouting and innovation initiatives.
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of sourcing engineering processes and best practices.
  • Leverage data analytics to support supplier evaluations, technology assessments, and strategic decision-making.
  • Apply knowledge of software, digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), or advanced analytics to enhance sourcing strategies and supplier innovation initiatives where applicable.

Must Have: Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree with minimum of 4 years of related experience
  • Masters degree with a minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • PhD with 0 years of related experience

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of engineering (science disciplines), supplier engineering, manufacturing engineering, product development, or related experience.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across engineering, operations, quality, supply chain, and sourcing.
  • Experience evaluating technical supplier capabilities and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of product development processes and supplier qualification methodologies.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience supporting Research & Technology (R&T), advanced development, or early-stage innovation programs.
  • Experience with Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) methodologies.
  • Background in supplier technology scouting, supplier innovation, or strategic technology partnerships.
  • Understanding of medical device manufacturing processes and regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of emerging manufacturing technologies, automation, advanced materials, digital manufacturing, or Industry 4.0.
  • Familiarity with software-enabled products, digital health technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, or data analytics.
  • Experience performing technology assessments, supplier risk evaluations, and commercialization planning.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority across global, matrixed organizations.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$108,000.00 - $162,000.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
