What does a Medium Rare chef do?

A Medium Rare chef specializes in preparing meats, particularly steaks, to a medium rare doneness, which means the center is warm and red, typically cooked to an internal temperature of about 130–135°F (54–57°C). This role requires precise knowledge of meat cuts, cooking times, and temperatures to consistently achieve the desired result. In some contexts, 'Medium Rare' may also refer to someone working at a restaurant or business named Medium Rare, where the chef would be responsible for preparing signature dishes to the restaurant's standards.

What are the main challenges of working in an event production role at Medium Rare, and how can new team members prepare for them?

Event production at Medium Rare often involves tight deadlines, fast-paced environments, and managing multiple stakeholders simultaneously. New team members can expect to coordinate with various departments—such as creative, technical, and logistics—to ensure seamless event execution. Proactively communicating, staying organized, and being adaptable are crucial skills for overcoming these challenges. Familiarizing yourself with project management tools and staying updated on industry trends can also help you succeed in this dynamic role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chef specializing in medium rare dishes, and why are they important?

To excel as a Chef specializing in medium rare dishes, you need strong culinary fundamentals, knife skills, food safety knowledge, and relevant culinary certifications or experience. Mastery of kitchen equipment such as grills, thermometers, and sous-vide systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for delivering consistently high-quality results in a fast-paced environment. These skills ensure precision in cooking temperatures and quality, which are critical for guest satisfaction and kitchen efficiency.

Please include a cover letter and resume with your application. Again, if you are interested in continuing work after the summer and if you anticipate a FWS award for the fall semester, please note this in your application. This is not required for consideration or hiring.
Starting pay is $16.71/hr. with a weekly work commitment of up to 20 hours expected. More summer work hours may be possible depending on job requirements and worker interests and availability. Following paid training, weekday hours from M-F can be flexible within daily windows extending from 9-5.
