What does a medical technical writer do?

As a medical technical writer, your job is to help create scientific documents that explain various aspects of health care and related technology to other people. In this role, you may define terminology, write an article based on guidelines set out by the buyer, or produce marketing or educational material. Medical technical writers often write for varying audiences, ranging from new medical students to highly-educated professionals. Therefore, the ability to understand the material and convince audiences you are an expert on the material is essential to this role. Some medical technical writers publish in professional medical journals instead of more broadly-available avenues.

What does a medical technical writer do?

A Medical Technical Writer creates clear, accurate, and concise documentation related to medical, scientific, or healthcare topics. Their work includes preparing regulatory submissions, clinical study reports, user manuals for medical devices, and educational materials for healthcare professionals or patients. They collaborate with scientists, researchers, and regulatory experts to ensure complex information is communicated effectively and complies with industry standards. Strong writing skills and an understanding of medical terminology are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical technical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Technical Writer, you need a solid background in life sciences or medicine, excellent written communication skills, and attention to detail, often supported by a degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with regulatory guidelines (such as FDA or EMA), reference management tools, and document management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, the ability to convey complex information clearly, and adaptability to fast-changing requirements distinguish outstanding professionals in this role. These skills ensure the production of accurate, compliant, and understandable medical documents essential for regulatory approval and effective communication within the healthcare industry.

What are some common challenges faced by medical technical writers when working with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Medical Technical Writers often collaborate closely with subject matter experts such as physicians, researchers, and regulatory professionals. A common challenge is translating complex scientific or clinical information into clear, accurate, and regulatory-compliant documents while maintaining the intended meaning. Writers may also encounter tight deadlines or limited access to busy SMEs, requiring effective communication and project management skills. Building strong relationships and preparing well-structured questions can help streamline the review process and ensure high-quality deliverables.
