Job description

We are seeking an experiencedย Publishingย Managerย toย helpย build andย lead the overall strategy and performance of ourย books publishingย imprint,ย Absurd Ventures Press. In conjunction with an external team of publishing domain experts, this roleย helpsย overseeย the imprint with direct responsibility for revenue growth, profitability, and the long-termย successย of the publishing program. Theย Publishingย Managerย drives both creative and financialย successย ensuring thatย production, design,ย marketing,ย and managing editorial teams work effectively toward shared goals.ย The role requires a blend of strategic vision, commercial acumen, and creative leadership to shape theย list'sย direction.ย

Core Responsibilities:ย 

  • Help developย imprintย strategy, ensuring year-over-year growth in topline revenue and profitability.ย 
  • Work with our publishing partners to oversee the critical path for theย imprint program.ย This includes providingย oversight to internal and external teams in Editorial, Managing Editorial,ย Production,ย and Art, ensuring alignment, efficiency, and financial discipline.ย 
  • Collaborate withย sales, marketing, publicity,ย subrights,ย and distribution to deliver profitable titles to market whileย maintainingย strong margins.ย 
  • In conjunction withย external publishing partners andย theย Absurdย finance team,ย help manageย financialย goalsย of the program, including budgeting, P&L evaluation, and overall profitability.ย 
  • Represent the publishing program internally and externally, cultivating strong relationships with authors, agents, and industry partners.ย 
  • Manage all stages of each title's print/digital lifecycle, including review of all passes; coordination with production, design, and freelancers; drafting of copy and metadata; and maintenance of reprints/backlist.ย 
  • Work with our external publishing partners toย develop relationships with literary agents, authors, illustrators, and other partners.ย 
  • Attend conferences and trade shows as needed and lead internal/external presentations. ย 

Core Qualifications:ย 

  • 5ย to 8ย years of publishing experience, including progressive leadership responsibility within a publishing houseย 
  • Provenย track recordย of driving revenue growth and profitabilityย 
  • Deep understanding of the book publishing marketย and strong editorial judgmentย 
  • Highly connected network of contacts in publishingย ecosystemย (agents, retail, media, influencer networks,ย etc.)ย ย 
  • Experienceย working with stakeholders acrossย internalย teamsย andย managingย external partnershipsย 
  • Demonstrated success in acquisitions and author/agent relationsย 
  • Strong financial and strategic planning skillsย 
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership abilitiesย 
  • A taste for the absurdย

The base pay range for this position is $80,000 to $105,000 per year. Actual compensation is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We also offer a competitive package of benefits including vacation time, sick time, company holidays, parental leave, medical/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and 401(k)ย matching toย regular full-time employees. Certain roles may also be eligible for bonus and equity.ย
