Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentices are responsible for providing direct patient care and will practice up to the skills learned and approved to practice through the Apprenticeship program guidelines. MA Apprentices will apply current healthcare concepts and assist with routine or general clinical responsibilities that may contribute directly and indirectly to patient care under the supervision of the MA-C Coach. May work up to the documented level of academic and clinical competence accomplished in the individual’s Apprenticeship program. The Apprentice is expected to complete 2,000 hours of clinical practice under the guidance of the MA-C Coach, coursework (unpaid), 3 skills labs (unpaid), and participate in all required apprenticeship activities. Successful completion of the Apprenticeship program and the national MA-C certification test, in conjunction with remaining an employee in good standing, will qualify Apprentices for entry into the regular job classification as an MA-C.

This is a full-time position working day shift Monday-Friday (with occasional weekends).

The intended start date for this role is 10/12/2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Shadows Medical Assistant - Certified coach per Washington Association of Community Health (WACH)
  2. Completes WACH InReach coursework and follows all requirements of the program.
  3. Greets a variety of patients and escorts them to their exam rooms; informs patients of delays throughout the visit.
  4. Prepares patients for provider; anticipates needs of provider to maintain efficient patient flow.
  5. Performs phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed by the provider.
  6. Performs and documents immunizations.
  7. Ensures exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
  8. Cleans, prepares, and sterilizes instruments.
  9. Assists the provider with procedures, exams, and patient education.
  10. Assists with prescription refills under the direction and authorization of the provider.
  11. Manages appropriate patient referrals and required documentation.
  12. Observes and follows required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and general safety of professionals and patients.
  13. Answers telephones, schedules patients, and supports care team members.
  14. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS), equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  15. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  16. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization's values.
  17. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  18. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The professional in this position reports to the Clinic Care Director. The person in this position will work closely with other Samaritan professionals within various departments to include, but not limited to the Physician Offices, Lab, Pharmacy, Imaging, etc.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Education:
    1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
    2. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience:
    1. Previous experience is not required
  • Skills/Competencies:
    1. Proficiency in the use of computers and common office technology.
    2. Basic math and effective reasoning skills for application in a clinical setting
    3. Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
    4. Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines. 
    5. Current (Healthcare Provider [HCP] level) CPR certification or ability to complete within two months of hire.
    6. Ability to receive constructive feedback professionally and respectfully, and use it as an opportunity for professional growth and performance improvements
    7. Maintains documentation for completion of Apprenticeship requirements and submits documentation in a timely manner

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Frequent prolonged standing/walking. Occasional lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.
  2. Occasional heavy lifting (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.).
  3. Maneuver and/or transfer patients.
  4. Manual dexterity and mobility.
  5. Ability to read and understand patient charts, provider orders, tests results, etc.
  6. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
