Summary of Functions:
The Medical Examiner Donation Specialist (MEDS) is responsible for maximizing donation opportunities at all our partner coroner and medical examiner offices. The MEDS is also responsible for representing OneLegacy to develop those relationships that will maximize the potential for organ, eye and tissue donation as well as assisting in determining if the tissue is suitable for recovery and transplantation. The MEDS is also responsible for gathering clinical information on all CME referrals from the referral facility and additional healthcare providers and will assist in donor allocation as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
- Accountable for coroner and medical examiner’s tissue referral and donation performance.
- Performs screening at the coroner offices to identify potential donors.
- Performs medical record review and qualifies a donor for recovery.
- Collaborates and builds working relationships with Medical Examiner/Coroner/Sherriff staff.
- Obtains CME release for donor recovery.
- Performs Recovery Coordination as needed.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with OneLegacy policies and procedures, the standards and regulations as outlined by the FDA, UNOS, CMS, and other applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Collaborates with OneLegacy team members and key Medical Examiner and Coroner partners to provide real time referral support and assess the effectiveness of the donation process.
- Collaborates with OneLegacy team members and partners to develop and implement policies, procedures, and processes that maximize organ, eye, and tissue donation.
Required functions of the Medical Examiner Donation Specialist:
CME Screening:
- Performs screening for potential donors at the Medical Examiner/Coroner facilities.
- Gathers information from the coroner’s databases, medical records, and investigations reports.
- Collaborates, builds, and maintains working relationships with Medical Examiner/Coroner staff.
- Interviews pathologist and obtains COD and autopsy findings.
- Coordinates with Coroner personnel on the recovery time logistics for specimen collection, autopsy scheduling, request for Photos/X-rays, and other processing to identify potential referrals.
- Performs physical exam of potential donors.
- Performs specimen collection and request for specimen hold and release.
- Obtains authorization to recover on consented tissue donors for transplant/research within the CME/Coroner jurisdiction.
- Collect coroner post-recovery follow up information, such as autopsy report/COD/Investigation, reports as requested by Donor Information Department or Eye Bank Operations.
- Conducts interviews of investigator or pathologist consult on recovered donors as requested by Donor Information Department or Eye Bank Operations.
- Communicates in real time with various departments throughout the organization regarding organ and tissue donation.
- Enters screening information into Electric Medical Records system.
- Reports referral to the Family Care Center departments for approach.
- Communicates with Eye Bank staff regarding autopsy scheduling.
- Documents screening information into the Electronic Medical Records system.
- Transports tissue to end user.
Referral Management:
- Responsible for gathering clinical information on all hospital referrals that are ME/Coroner cases when applicable.
- Reviews cases for suitability, post triage completion by other Coordinators, for accuracy and completeness.
- Works with FCC Shift leads to maintain updates and help manage the digitalDONOR status board.
- Coordinates recovery logistics as applicable to the case such as CME permission, transportation of the donor, etc.

Other Required Functions:
- Perform timely chart corrections when requested by Quality Systems and/or Eye Bank.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Required to have a sense of urgency when called in for a recovery.

- Pay close attention to detail.
- Required to be competent in the use of a laptop computer, desktop computer or mobile device.
- Required to be competent with using email.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by management.
Administrative Work:
- Example of Administrative Work:
- CME screening, delivery of Tissue to end user, acquisition of Medical Records, Policy & Procedure reading, in office training sessions, meeting attendance, online training performed at a OL facility and chart corrections.
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Required to have one of the following: Completion of an EMT program, completion of a Surgical Technologist program, current or previous licensure as a paramedic. Previous experience in tissue or organ recovery.
Experience: Three years of experience in an allied health field such as (embalming, physiology, anatomy, mortuary sciences, surgical, EMS, EMT, ER Technologist, paramedic, pathology).
Certifications/License: CEBT or CTBS certification preferred. Required to have CTBS within 2 years of working in the position. OneLegacy requires employees to maintain their current California driver’s license and current vehicle insurance based on California minimum insurance coverage standards.
Requirement: Must be able to pass a Coroner Office background check.
Equipment: Reliable automotive transportation is required. Required to have reliable cellphone when available to work.
Pay Range: $52,325-$74,233.25
- Night Shift differential available
- The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, OneLegacy considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
